yeah, but i dont think i have any bags that would be able to withstand that kinda treatment...

yeah, of course, i'd be using the perlite and mixing it in with the poo for an outdoor bed.

so should i use my "fake" straw at all in this bed?

oven bags will work,
you won't even need a PC since no grain is used.
just steam.

i suppose you might as well toss in your faux-straw,
even grass clippings will work in a pinch.

will gallon ziplocks withstand heat from steaming?

i was just gonna mix 3 quarts verm, 3 quarts coir, 3 quarts perlite, all together

and then use that 2:1 with brf, and just add water until it feels right, as the spawn

or not use any perlite at all, since i dont really need it as of right now, maybe for the next bed. the coir/verm is giving me all the spawn i need.

and if the ziplock bags work, could i just fill up the bags with the mix, steam, and inject in different spots of the bag w/ live myc, and then just tape the holes?

some ziplocks can take steam,
most cannot.
oven bags are sold right by the ziplocks
[used to bake a turkey, etc.]
get like 4-5 for a few bucks [<$5]
your mix as proposed
should colonize just fine.

I also pronounce it koy-er. I also have wondered what the correct way to say it is. Very interesting.

I'm glad someone asked.
I say something different every time.

koi-yer

That's my best guess.

Apparently I should have read the entire thread before guessing.
I'm certainly glad that this is settled.

Just wondering,
How many of us were staring at a search toolbar while discussing this?

since i opened mycrotopia.com
it's become common for me to have coir around.
i notice that even if i get it wet
so the bricks expand & fall apart,
i can leave it laying around in a 5 gallon bucket
for weeks even months
and it never turns green or gets smelly
but if ones pasturizes/sterilizes it
then it can contam much more easily.
i think maybe folks should just stop
pasturizing their coir casings.

do you leave out in open air with the lid off?

all i've ever done was pour hot water on it and i've never had contams. maybe you're right.

EDIT: i've been totally forgetting that this stuff is originally used as aquarium bedding for reptiles. makes sense that it wouldn't contam.
