Ive had great success growing fungi, and life responsibilities have taken me away from the forums and growing of all types. OZZZ has been blue, but now hes going GREEN :weedpoke:

The tinker driven, challenge seeker in me has driven me project bound once again. Keep in mind THIS IS MY VERY FIRST MJ GROW ----> EVER. Although I have grown plants before, anyone remember my toilet garden with tomatoes and green peppers under the 400w HPS??? lol ....

Lets take a look at my slap together micro grow. Im relocating to Hawaii on Feb. 18th so not only is this slap together, but its on a tight time frame as well.

Lets take a look at the grow box shall we?

2 - 20 gallon black rubbermaid containers were used. Inside painted flat white (which was a bad idea is chipping and peeling everywhere). 3 x 42w cfl's (2 red, 1 blue) as well as 2 x 23w cfls (red) are being used in conjunction with a 1/4" glass heat shield kept in place with duct tape and a couple of loose fitting screws.

A carbon scrubber was constructed out of two sterilite containers as you will see. Two exhaust fans are being used, both are 120mm, rated at 78 cfm, .38A, and 2.78 mmH20 pressure rating. One fan is exhausting the seperate lighting chamber that has 4 - 2.25" passive intake holes and the second fan is pulling through the sterilite scrubber, through 4" dryer ducting. The grow chamber has 3 - 2.25" and an additional 1" passive intake hole. All intakes are fitted with either 2" 90 deg PVC elbows or 2" PVC T's.

Silcone and duct tape was used as sealant, and weatherstripping was installed on the lip of the bottom tub for seal.

The carbon scrubber is assembled as in the following diagrams, keep in mind that the lights and intakes shown in this diagram are not quit accurate in the fact that I have 5 bulbs, not three, and the top tub has 4 intake holes not two. Additionally the bottom tub has an extra 1" intake hole not shown on the diagram.

Initially, 4 blueberry cross beans were wetted in a washcloth. Once they sprouted they were planted in dixie cups (nevermind the peach habanero seedlings :P )

http://mycotopia.net...=1&d=1262973727

http://mycotopia.net...=1&d=1262973727

They were vegged for approx. 10 days, then transplanted into 6" green pots (approx. 1 gal) except for the one in the butter dish. Soil used was ultimate potting mix, just a soil mix I grabbed that was super light and fluffy with a good amount of perilite. I then added an additional 30% perilite, approx. 2 teaspoons of garden tone per gallon of soil (4-6-6 which is organic consisting of blood meal, bone meal, kelp meal, feather meal, greensand, etc, etc) and 1 teaspoon of agricultural lime per gallon of soil. The plants have been watered with tap water that was allowed to set out for a few days. I gave a light fish emulsion 5-1-1 feeding right when they were in dixie cups and had a few sets of leaves, then again after transplant. Other then that it has been straight water or molasses water.

http://mycotopia.net...=1&d=1262973727

After transplant they were allowed to regroup and grow for a few more days making it about 2 weeks veg time total

http://mycotopia.net...=1&d=1262973727

Then they were flipped to 12/12 ...... after about 10 days of flower I saw ballzzzzzzzzzzzzz on two of the plants ....

http://mycotopia.net...=1&d=1262973727

Which gave me the two females I had hoped for!!! :headbang:

http://mycotopia.net...=1&d=1262973727

http://mycotopia.net...=1&d=1262973727

After about 17 days they started stretching a bit and I was worried I would run out of room so I tied the tops over to the side giving lower bud sites more light and equalizing the height of the plant.

http://mycotopia.net...=1&d=1262973727

http://mycotopia.net...=1&d=1262973727

........ and currently Im now at approx. 25 days flower, one lanky pheno is already developing buds, the other, stockier female is just starting to produce hairs ... even though she has been more vigorous throughout the grow. Temps are stable at 71-75 degs. ZERO smell with the scrubber ... its not exactly stealth as it looks like something out of a sci-fi movie but its working for a small, self contained grow.

Thanks guys!

Hope things are going good for all of you.

Im hoping they have time to finish, I need to pull them in about another 35 days or so, so that only gives them 60 days or maybe a hair longer of total flower time.... approx. 7.5 weeks.

I like the filter, how is it working out for you? I tried something like it, but my execution was poor. I ended up using one of the ionizing air filters, which soaked up the fragrance fairly well.

lol ... I knew someone would!

Ill be getting some updated pics soon they are developing buds nicely.

You know, with that 78cfm independant fan exhausting the light chamber, it is keeping it completely cool. Im half tempted to yank out those CFL's and put a 250w HPS in there as I have one laying around thats not being used .. haha.. Im certain this exhaust fan with the glass heat shield would keep it cool enough.

Only problem is my sq. footage is like 1.8sq ft... haha.

That would be like 130w/sq ft or like 16,500 lumens per sq foot. Way over the recommended 50w per sq/ft and 10,000 lumens per sq/ft

lol .... Im almost tempted to do it anyway, but theres other issues to think about other than just heat and lumens isnt there? What about radiation?? The plants would be approx. 3" of the bulb..

Probably a huge overkill?

Whats the vote peeps? Stay with the CFL's or swap??

Please don't burn your beauties with your HPS.

I forgot to mention...

I noticed that some of the CFLs are mounted vertical and base end up. People have had problems with bulbs burning out with scary looking scorch marks and such. I see that one of the bulbs has a base that looks yellowed. Horizontal mounting is recommended, two rows of four CFLS(2x4) would make a chamber that could yield 3.5oz grows. Well in any case, please keep an eye on that CFL.

Personally, I think you can let the plants grow into the CFLs as the growth arrests during flowering. There will be some leaf burn, but the leaves don't all just get burned and die. The leaves will get burned in tissues that are actually touching. Leaves only get partly burned while the rest of the plant is absorbing the maximum light possible. I think the upside far outweighs the downside. Just try to train the colas around the CFLs.

I used 6 CFLs and got 2.5oz when I grew a plant in a 3gal pot. The most I got from a 1gal pot was a little over 1oz. Cannabis loves its root space.

Noob here, but very, very nice!
And - even if you have to yank 'em early, you're moving to Hawaii! Just start again island-style.

I guess I should have voted. Use the HPS if you can mount is at least 6" away, perhaps more. People keep the 400W bulbs at least 12" away. If you cannot figure out a way to do that, I can't, you could add at least 2 more CFLs. (What a crappy way to vote.)

I posted a drawing of the rubbermaid chamber I used, and a drawing of a layout I would like to try out next time. It would be a mylar curtain design, I think...

(Added, there should be 6CFLs in the first drawing, not 5, oops)

Good point Dipole, and you know ... Ive read that they should be mounted that way but then I saw some grows where people had them verticle.... with the glass heat shield especially I probably should have them horizontal. Unfortunately, at this time Im not sure how I could do that..... maybe Ill do a little tinkering and see what I can come up with ;)

I mounted ceramic lamp bases to the inside walls of the rubbermaid. The lamp bases have a screw hole in them, I think a 4-40 or maybe a 6-32 screw with a washer worked pretty good. I also sandwiched in a clear plastic sheet to insulate the wiring from the reflective duct tape I lined the inside with. It was not the greatest design having exposed wire connections, but as long as no water got splashed on it I thought, what the hell. If I were to do it again, I would punch a hole big enough to let most of the lamp base stick out of the chamber and have all the wiring on the outside. As it was with U connectors on the wires and heatshrink tubing over the solder joints it was fairly clean. The power and heat are so low using 20-22ga wiring was plenty big enough, 18ga would be fat and happy.
