Pans Jam Super High Spawn Ratio Experiment
#1
Posted 28 January 2010 - 09:43 AM
I've used 3 jars of 500ml with rye grain/verm (75%/25%) spawned G2G from small jar's PF-Tek of pan jam, they were colonized in 7-10 days as much
It's 3:1 ratio, 75% substrate colonized, 25% bulk substrate ..
Spawn Substrate:
75% rye grain
10% h.poo
10% verm
5% straw
Casing layer:
50% peat
50% coarse size verm
4 tablespoon of calcium carbonate
FAE is 15" ON - 105" OFF (2 hours cycles)
Substrate's height is between 4-6cm and temperature weather is about 29ºC
Lets see what happens!
Best regards! :)

I'm betting on 1,5-2x the yield of your last tub if everything else is the same. :headbang:

Hope you get a super yield!!

Hey Om, I hope it too! :teeth: :headbang:
It´s a picture from above, it´s very hot here, temps between 29-35ºC and it seems to be overlay :horse:
Best regards :)

Yesterday I´ve fan manually and I´ve seen how some part of overlay turned to blue quickly! :amazed:
pic1: high spawn ratio 3:1 monotub with lot of overlay
pic2: another monotub with spawn ratio 1:1 - 1:2
Best regards

The other high spawn rate monotub is  :headbang: really nice though!
What was the spawn rate on the last monotub you did, in the other thread? Is everything else the same?

Too bad about the overlay.. it's almost definitely because of the high spawn rate combined with the high temperatures. Maybe that's beyond the upper limit of what's good...

Yeah, too hot and not too much fresh air :horse:
Both monotubs have same bulk substrate but in different ratios, high spawn ratio got 3:1 and another one got 1:1-1:2
Another thread got rushes and this only a bit of straw
Well, finally I´ve harvested the monotub with 1:1-1:2 ratio, it was 67g fresh and this time they looks a bit less wet so I hope that ratio of drying would be like 6-8%
pic1,pic2: shrooms
pic3: taller shrooms
Monotub of experiment is growing yet, maybe those holes with polyfill are a bit smaller and got lot of CO2 :horse:
Best regards

The record in that contest was 16,2cm by CoyoteMesc and Spacecake.

If you just let yours grow a bit longer they might have gained that last 1 cm and the Mycotopia record. ;-) :cacti:

Your shrooms are not falling over when they mature at all?

would that be hard for me to grow if ive only just begun w cubes?
Ive heard they are real potent, like 1 gram is equal to 3.5 of cubes?
I would eat 5 grams of those.

Glad to see you're having success growing pans in a monotub. I 2nd eatyu's comment about the cpu fans.
The mycelium that you thought was overlayed stained blue when you manually fanned it. Did you find out whether that was overlay or if it was just the exceedingly warm temperatures or the smaller c02 holes?
You just look like you got a great harvest. I'll be using your idea with the monotub for sure when I run out of room for my current fruit chamber. Cool!

kickass. what size tubs you using? and is it just that cpu fan directly on the tubs for air exchange?
excellent grow!:headbang:
Small tub is 30x20x20cm
Big tub is 40x30x30cm
Yes, it's a cpu fan directly on the tubs and it worked better with some tyvek clothe instead polyfill, I've tried both and IME tyvek allow less FAE and casing layer don't get dry so quickly
CPU fan is connected to a mobile charger (4.5v) and It works 15" ON, 105" OFF (2 hours cycle) connected to a cheap analogic temporizer, it's like a breeze
The other holes of monotub are filled with polyfill

Go for them, they're not to difficult as they seems to be, this setup works fine and keep enough moisture for growing them
Waylitjim's Tek is great and work really nice :headbang:
I also like to start with small amount of PF-Tek and then G2G to big jars with rye grain/vermiculite (70%/30%) and then spawn in h.poo/straw
They're more visual than cubes and feel better in the body and don't give anguish like cubes (IMO)
Experiments like these rock! :headbang:

Yeah, they turned blue so quickly when I fanned manually (I've never tried to do it manually with pans)
I think that overlay is for too much heat, excess of CO2 and moisture, it would be great to growin them in 24-25ºC
Thanks to everyone!

Very nice harvest from that monotub!!! If that competition for longest and biggest pans were still on, you would have some serious contenders for the tallest ones!!!

heheehe I didn't knew about that contest! :amazed: :headbang:
LOL :rasta:Yep, there were some strange shrooms in the middle, I don't know why .. it could be some bacteria, excess of CO2 or a bit dry ?
This time I've harvested them a bit sooner and there were not shrooms falling like last times (and no spores around) ;)

I've found that bottom holes were almost filled by mycelium so it was difficult allow the FAE :eusa_doh:
Many of shrooms smelled like rotten, it was like 1/4-1/3 of total I think :eusa_wall
The another shrooms who smelled/looked fine were 95g weight fresh and now they're drying
I've decided to threw out the monotub because don't smell well, it's like moist :horse:
The another monotub is still running and it goes for the 2nd flush, lets see if they can reach 16cm! :eusa_danc:dance::greenboun
Best regards to all! :headbang:
PS: they looks smaller, I think it's because excess of CO2

Too bad about the rotting shrooms though :horse:
I guess I wasn't completely off at guessing at a 1,5-2 x higher yield than the other monotub. :) If the overlay had been avoided I'm sure it would have crossed the 2x mark.
What do you think, was it too much spawn? Worth continuing experiments?
My opinion, based on this experiment and on my own at times traumatic experience with pan spawn rates is that no less than a 2:1 (66%) spawn rate should ideally be used for pans, maybe this 3:1 (75%) is better if it's possible to incubate at relatively low temperatures to avoid the overlay formation. But I'll join in on the experiment not too far away in time. ;)
