Hey guys, so I've seen a few people now that are having problems with their popcorn tek, and a few people even ask me the exact steps I took.
So, I figured I'd work on publishing the exact tek I use. This is a blend of many different teks I've read about here on myco. This one is what works for me the absolute best.

My jars are normally fully colonized in 14-17 days, and these results are repeatable with every strain I've tried. This tek is explaining how to make 7 quart jars of spawn.

First, you're going to want a large bag of popcorn. I pick up 50 pound bags, such as this.
http://mycotopia.net...=1&d=1270661973

Now, put about 4 quarts (this will leave some left over) into a large pot, or even toss it into your PC.
http://mycotopia.net...=1&d=1270661973

Fill the pot/pc with HOT water, about 2-3" above the popcorn, Make sure you get all the floaters pushed down. They will not commonly resurface once submerged.

Patience is key here. Let the popcorn soak for between 12 and 24 hours. After soaking, place the popcorn (not in any jars) into your PC, fill it up about 3" above the popcorn, and PC it at 12-13 PSI for 90 minutes.
Posted Image

Next, rinse the popcorn (I use cold water), then strain the popcorn well and let it sit for a good 15-20 minutes.
http://mycotopia.net...=1&d=1270661973

While this is straining, it's a good time to prepare the lids for your quart jars. I take a pair of scissors that you can take apart, and stab it through the lid. I work it through and twist the scissor blade, making a small hole.
http://mycotopia.net...=1&d=1270661973
http://mycotopia.net...=1&d=1270661973
http://mycotopia.net...=1&d=1270661973

Pull some poly through the hole, and make sure it's good and tight. Afterwards, cut off the lose poly.

http://mycotopia.net...=1&d=1270661973
http://mycotopia.net...=1&d=1270661973

By now, it's probably about time to start filling up the jars with the popcorn. Here is what the prepared popcorn (on the left) will look like at this point compared to normal popcorn.
http://mycotopia.net...=1&d=1270663525

It will also be soft. You should be able to bite through it with no "crunch".
Load up the jars to a bit over 3/4 full.
http://mycotopia.net...=1&d=1270661973
http://mycotopia.net...=1&d=1270661973

Put the lid on loosely (I prefer upside down) and put foil around it.
http://mycotopia.net...=1&d=1270661973
http://mycotopia.net...=1&d=1270661973

Next, place the jars onto a rack in your PC, and fill up the PC until the bottom few inches of the jar is under water.
http://mycotopia.net...=1&d=1270661973
http://mycotopia.net...=1&d=1270661973

PC the jars at 15psi for 90 minutes. Make sure you do not start the 90 minute counter until the PC reaches 15. Take the jars out, and leave them alone until they are cool to the touch. You can also leave them in the PC to cool down, but this will take longer.

On this next step, you might notice just a bit of standing water in the jar.
http://mycotopia.net...=1&d=1270661973

Shake it up VERY well, and you should have no more standing water, even after settling. If you have massive amounts of water in the jar, then some probably got into the jar during the PC, and I would recommend against using it. Popcorn is cheap.

The moment of gratification: noc up the jar through the poly stuffed lid. Shake them VERY well. I normally use between 1-2 ccs per quart jar.
http://mycotopia.net...=1&d=1270661973

Put the jars in a DARK environment. I keep my temperature at 81F-82F, and it works well.
You should begin to notice growth in about 5 days. I give the jar a good shake at around 8 days.
Between two and three weeks after noc'ing the jar up, you should have something that looks similar to this.
http://mycotopia.net...=1&d=1270661973

As I said, this tek has done me nothing but good. I've had no contam issues, and going from noc'ing to 100% colonized in under 3 weeks is amazing.

Hope this was able to clear up some issues that anyone might be having with a simple popcorn tek. Thanks for reading!

Excellent write-up. Cool thread.

I'm not so sure that this qualifies as a TEK in the sense of the word. A TEK is an unique innovation that differs from other previous TEKS and therefore becomes its own. Nothing shown differs from dozens/hundreds of write-ups and previous TEKS , except maybe how you explained it , which is excellent by the way , and your pics are nicely done to.

This is just one persons opinion and I say it with respect. Not trying to be nit-picky or any other negative thing. I just believe in the preservation and advancement of what we call "TEKS" , so I thought i'd chime in. It's hard because I don't want to come across as being critical ...

Please carry on , good job. Popcorn threads are always welcomed and appreciated !

I have to agree with Hyphae on the "TEK" portion of the title.

However, I rated the thread highly because it is an excellent example of how a DIY pictorial of popcorn should be written for a thread. :eusa_clap

The title can always be edited if Incredible wishes it.

Something like ~ "IncredibleEdible's Popcorn Pictorial-Illustrated step by step from scratch."

Very nice thread and concise and accurate.

Nice wright up:headbang: You got three mushies in one day that has to be some kind of a record!

I do however have a tip for ya.I noticed that you pour water in with a cup for your final pc run. I find that it saves quite a bit of time if you bring the water to a boil or at least a simmer before putting into the pc as per the instructions in the pc owners guide (well mine anyway I have a 16q presto). This is just something I do that saves quite a bit of time.:teeth:

Thanks for all the feedback guys. :)

Once I started popcorn, I never looked back. This tek is also a fantastic way to prepare a jar for a g2g transfer. Around 10 days for a fully colonized quart of g2g.

I only do one g2g though, as doing a g2g from a g2g really has shown to slow down colonization times.

Incase anyone was wondering - I was noc'ing up some HB that I got from Mycro in the pic. Cannot wait to see how it turns out. :)

You pc the popcorn twice?
Was I misreading? Great write-up tho.

Personally I want as little work as possible,
And go as bulk as possible...
And a double pc procedure definitely isn't
for me.

Great pix tho :P

great write up
thats exactly what i do,except only 30 minutes on first pc-only contams have been a couple wet spots, a dash of verm can prevent that
shroomzilla-you gotta hydrate em,this actually saves time as opposed to simmering
