have you ever seen a lopho just begin to flower? i'm curious what to look for.

hm? you should look for pink whiteish flowers like this
http://mycotopia.net...=1&d=1150126476
They usually flower in the spring/early summer and the fruits pop out a month or two after. The flowers open in daytime and close in the night. after 5days or so, they wither and you should just leave them.
The fruits are small and pink. I just let them dry completely out on the plant before I pick them. They contain about 5-20 small black seeds each.
A single peyote can pollinate itself but they produce more seeds if pollinated by ather plants.
Fruits look like this.

one of my smaller cactus is showing a bud!! i can't see what else it would be. funny thing is it's not on the button i thought would flower. live and learn - i've been wrong many times before.
do i need to take a small paintbrush and help in the pollination or will it take care of itself?
thanks for all the help i've received here!

Sorry if its a dumb Q but, how much of an advantage will you get from grafting say... a san pedro onto something rather than just seeding it? Like a much shorter time to harvest or what?

Nice big fricii there fucgubarn  how old is it?

do i need to take a small paintbrush and help in the pollination or will it take care of itself?

Ive never done that, they produce seeds anyway, dunno if it will improve anything but guess it wouldnt hurt to try it.

You get growth that would take several years from seed, in just a few months-½year when grafting. Only downside when grafting is that due to the rapid growth, alkaloid concentration is lower than if grown on own rootsystem. The cactus needs time to build up alkaloid levels, you have to cut it off the grafting stock at some point and root it on its own and let build up alkaloids. Hard to say how long time they need, but at least 6months to a year on own roots would do the trick imo.
Still, it takes ½ the time to get same amount of potent cactus flesh when grafting than if grown from seed.

And pardon my french :special:

I notice that two different type of cactus are being grafted together. Please excuse the maybe silly question...Can you graft any cactus to any cactus? If so which characteristics will be the dominant characteristics? I have no experience with cactus but these threads make me more and moreinterested.

thanks!
here is another one :D
they make me smile everytime i look at them!
they must be over 15 years old

quote:
'Not all plants can be grafted together. Grafts are often only possible on near family members. Tobacco on tomato is possible but an apple tree on a cucumber rootstock is not possible. Since the Cactaceae family is a relatively young family, grafts between different species of cacti most often grow together. In fact I have not encountered one case of incompatibility in cacti at all.'

What pereskiopsis is the best for grafting... I looked and noticed that there is quite a variety

Pedestrian: They all work fine for grafting as far as I know.

Update:

Peruvianus

Dec05 March8th-06 June6th-06
Now Aug5th-06
http://mycotopia.net...=1&d=1154782033
The grafting stock cannot carry the weight of it much longer, soon its time for it to be cut off and rooted on its own.

Another peruvianus from the ones I started in march8th-06, see pics above in this thread.
June6th-06
Now:
http://mycotopia.net...=1&d=1154782460

And last, a L.williamsii from the same batch in march that finally took off after a long time with no growth in the grafted seedling, the grafting stock just shooting branches instead, wich were cut off as they grew out.
june6th-06
Now pupping like crazy, can almost see a difference in size every day

here's the latest pics of my grafting experiment. the plant on the myrtillo has grown 1.3 cm in diameter since it was grafted in late april. the smaller san pedro has grown 1 cm, and the large pedro which was grafted a month or so ago has increased 5 mm. whoo-hoo!!

well, they weren't seedlings when grafted. they were a few years old. but what i did to hold them to the stock was place a pad of folded paper towel over each button and secured it to the pot with electrical tape for about a week. the portions of the buttons left rooted have produced one "pup" each. i'm still waiting for the scions to pup.
