Yes totally inspirational. Mushroom selling has become strict here in the last year. Michigan. They need to be inspected but there are only a couple "qualified" inspectors in the state. They havnt even set up the requirements to become "qualified" much less a program to do it. GRRR. Basicly they said old timers with lots of experience were the only ones to receive certificates. All 2 of them. They must be kept busy. Now this is for wild collected but somehow homegrown has been lumped in with wild.

Michigan has been doing some squirly stuff recently with their ag laws. It's the only state to have basically repealed the Right to Farm Act. 

 

Anyways, i have very fond memories of this thread. Wonder how the OP is doing?

 Yes they have. Still waiting to see how it plays out I guess. Anti right to farm act thing. Saying that it was only intended for larger farms. So far I dont know anyone directly affected. The possibilities are there though, being too close to neighbors ect but I guess no one has complained yet.

Being an organic farmer, i have news feeds setup for farming and ag news. Believe me, LOTS of family farmers and homesteaders have already been effected and it won't be long before the entire state economy starts to see backlash from it. That is some seriously backwards thinking shit.

Right. I have read some things but just saying that friends with animal rescues and small farms have not yet been affected. I hope it is repealed somehow in the near future. Im starting my own farm, its just put off a bit since this property didnt work out. Ill keep the requirements in mind for the next place. Even this one which is zoned farm and forest is questionable. We have one neighbor in 2 miles but it is directly next to our house. Property was split in the past and doesnt equal 10 acres to be considered an actual farm anymore. Not sure where that leaves it but we are leaving anyways. Those neighbors are great and havnt said a thing about chickens or whatever. The possibility was still there for it to go south though. Already looking at places for next summer. We love this one but owner/land contract hasnt worked for us.

Hey, wait a minute.

Michigan HAS the Right To Farm Act.

The last I checked, anything you raised on your land and sold THERE was protected.

I have no serious objection to “wild collected” mushrooms needing to be inspected; people can die from a simple screwup.

But blocking mushroom farming is ridiculous... you’d THINK a State “governed” by business-friendly Republicans wouldn’t screw that up, right?

I’m on the border with Indiana.    

I brushed up against the Health Department 25 years ago when I considered starting a Health Food business; the requirements didn’t seem extreme or unusual then.

But if somebody’s got their wires crossed, I need to know the details.   

I figure, we’re zone Commercial, I should be able to start a Mushroom Farm.

Can you fill in the gaps?   Who, What, and When?

But if the Health Department gives me grief, I’ll just sell to my local market which is across the border in Indiana.

After all, they can’t complain that you’re GROWING mushrooms, only set the standards for selling in Michigan.
