Eating sticklebacks

This is a bizarre idea.

Perhaps the subject doesn't fit in exactly to this board but here we go:

Does anyone eat, or know of people who eat, or have eaten, sticklebacks...?
I realise that the spines might pose a problem but perhaps there's a way to prepare them?

They're awfully little, though.

I was going to do this, I'd scissor off the stickles, the fins and maybe the heads, jar them up with brine and vinegar, then pressure cook them for an hour or so.

The vinegar will break down the bones - you'll have Stickleback Sardines.

You could likely eat them whole.

just looked on the wiki about them and it says that they are related to the seahorse and have no scales, would be interesting to know

How about the guts? Is it a necessity to gut them first?

I agree they're very small but you can catch large numbers of them with minimal effort and I was thinking they could make a useful if not particularly appetising survival food.

I didn't know they are related to the seahorse... True, that's interesting. The sticklebacks around here make up for it by being particularly boney. Even though they have no scales it is very difficult gutting these fish (basically because they're so small and fiddly).

Canned sardines aren't gutted - why bother?

I gave this some more thought - if you pack them in salt & oil, you'd have Stickleback Anchovies.

I didn't know canned sardines weren't gutted. They've been my staple diet for the last few weeks.

Packing in oil and salt would be a treat!

All fresh water fish can be eaten here in the UK although many are descibed as muddy tasting. Sure I have seen Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall (selfsufficiency idol) eat stickle-backs whole after snipping off the spine on youtube. Look up "River Cottage".
Eat like whitebait; fried dipped in beaten egg and breadcrumbs.

Let us know what they taste like.
