I have been experimenting with acetone as a solvent for honey oil
since butane is hard to find locally and pretty expensive.

These pictures are the results of a 30 second wash using acetone
on leaf

At first we used normal temp acetone and the oil came out dark

The oil was still great, but it was a lil harsh.

After that we experimented with putting the acetone in the freezer
after the oil had been extracted. This results in the waxes precipitating
into the bottom of the jar, which can easily be strained out through
a coffee filter.

Now we are putting the acetone in the freezer before doing the
extraction, the results speak for themselves :rasta:

First and second wash

Second held up to a light

that's no cleanup, and still a 30 second wash.

It tastes awesome also!

Nice work man! I really have to make some honey one of these days. Do you think using ice cold IPA would be any different than using acetone?

Just used this method over a test batch of trim and was very, very happy w/ the results.
I normally just use ISO alcohol but the reduction of waxes etc w/ the cold acetone really makes for a much smoother oil.

I dunno if the solubility of the IPA changes with temperature
the way that acetone does.

Do you have a weight on that "Quart" of trim?
A guess is fine. Just wondering what the return was, or what it returned from lol.

Really no idea... at all
I didn't weigh before or after.
Its probably a wasted effort
since plant material varies so
much from one sample to the
next.

kcmoxtractor, what grade of acetone do you use? The commercial stuff around here is scented with something to make it so that it is not good to inhale from a paper bag. Acetone in the early 1960's was pure and smelled fruity. Well I have wondered if commercial acetone worked or if technical grade was needed.

What is funny is that I first learned about using it for inhalation purposes from the lady that ran the toy store I used to my model airplane glue from. One day I went in to get some glue and she told me I needed to get a note from my mother. I never noticed the change in the smell until a friend opened up an old tube of glue and he showed me the difference.

The old original "Testors" model cement in the orange and white tube was quite popular by huffers back in the day. Never was my cup of tea, thankfully!
