well as we know farming isn't the biggest money maker these days.
So I figure I'd like to start a commune, or at least something along those lines.
Now I live on 10 acres and have room to build some small housing for anyone who worked/stayed here. Also have 15 acres that has been pastured for cattle for the last 30 yrs. Now this pasture could be used and certified organic for vegetable growing. Figuring heirloom veggies the way to go. Now I have the glass for the seedling house, and can build that onto my garage with a s/w exposer. So seeds can be started early Feb for spring planting.

Also will be getting my edible/medicinal mushroom grow going again.

Now I figure it'll take about 5-6 people to operate the mini farm full time.

I'm aiming at restraunts in the major areas within 1-1 1/2hr drive of here.
These are areas that already have a good population and some are college towns.
There are 5 major cities in this distance from my house.

I have good small equipment for the daily operations of the farm, so no real investment needed there.

So throwing this out there for some ideas/comments from my fellow Topiats.

Peace

Sounds like you'd be pretty set. More people need to get out of this trap called society before it totally collapse.

I have some horticultural knowledge, so if you're in my area and are looking for a knowledgeable, hardworking, anarcho-socialist farm hand, count me in! I also play trombone, so if you like to jam, I'm in on that boat as well. :)

I've often thought about starting or joining an intentional community (the word "commune" gives off too many Koresh / Jim Jones / manson family vibes for my taste).

It's definitely a great idea all around, imo. Living in a group of people who share an ideal sounds like a heaven on earth. I wish you the best of luck!

Thanks for the replies. Poppy shot ya a pm.

ID, I agree that the word commune may not be the best choice, but hell it's the one I chose. lmao
I believe that there are people that could live together, and work in harmony with each other and the land. Treating Mother Earth as she should be. And being rewarded for doing this.

sounds great! At the moment I cant contribute but I definetly can in the future, for references you may look into WWOOFing, world wide opportunities on organic farms, you may be able to learn some cool stuff on there.

Nothing wrong with the word "commune" IMO they were popular in the 60's and 70's with peace loving hippie's which, I think is what Crazy's idea is all about.

I would so love to help out but we have our own land you never know we could be commune buddies! :hippie:

Not a bad choice of words at all - I was just being :special:. I don't want anything I said to be construed as negative.

I really do wish I had something to offer in way of help, because it's an idea that definitely needs to come through.

I'm in NE North America........Great Lakes region. So this will be something that'll be started this fall with the mushrooms and then next spring with the veggies if the whole idea/plan comes together.

But please everyone with ideas or comments please don't hesitate to add them.
As I said this is a work in progress and I mentioned it here for the input from the great friends here

I'm not too close to the great lakes region, but if I ever find myself in the area, I'd definitely like to check out what you've got going on, sounds like it should be pretty awesome.

dreamer, well right now I have the polycarbonate plastic/glass for a 24'x8' leanto greenhouse off of my heated garage for seedlings. hopefully we can sqeez the room the first year for the plants to get to maturity to get out into the garden area. Then by the second year, hope to have a second greenhouse for this purpose.
Yes we will be having herbs for sure, great market for fresh herbs year round.
Still working out the details and available resources for as little upstart as possible.
Flowers??????? poppys maybe :teeth:

When we're up and going, we hope to have the kids in the area come by and learn the organic way of gardening. Being able to see no chemicals are needed to produce food is really important imo.
And all topiats will be welcome to visit us too.

Dani a festi would ROCK!!!!!! Would be great to meet you and Bri.
Heck ya never know where things could go growing produce as well as friendships.
Thanks for all the good vibes and love

This keeps sounding more and more badass. I plan on eventually buying a bunch of property in West Texas, not great for plants other than a BUNCH of cacti :special:. I will be willing to help any way I can with that land!

Crazy1 you are doing my dream. I've wanted to do full organic farming. In the later years I want to buy my parents' farm. Have cows, chickens, greenhouses and small fields. They are sitting on about 30 acres.

As far as the flower, a Calendula flower is pretty, and i use it as an anti-inflammatory and antifungal, but keep away from the mushies.
