I made a ratio of 1.5 new substrate to be mixed with the broken up cake chunks...This should make for a relatively speedy colonization...
I first cut away any infected areas of the cakes, then crumbled into the awaiting bucket of new substrate...In this case -hydrated straw pellets...
The mix will go into the screen bag to keep out bugs n critters...
I used fiberglass screen, sewn on 2 sides [u could glue or tape it also]
After filling ,the bag top is rolled over and a piece of steel wire threaded through ...

It's important to make sure the substrate in the bag is level and flat - cause u do not want pins forming inside the bag where they would be trapped...
A 2 inch layer of hardwood mulch is laid over the spot and watered...
The mulch has to be heavy enough to make good contact with the growing mycelium..It is in this lower casing zone where pins will form n' grow..
The myc loves hardwood mulch even though it is low nutrient stuff...
So now the patch is almost invisible and protected - all ya need now is occasional watering [The lower layer of mulch MUST stay moist] and a bit o luck....n' yer Golden....

The big mushroom is made entirely from cement ...The stem sections were poured in to plastic flower pots [larger ones for the base] then popped out at 36 hrs while they are still soft enough to be carved ...they are dry stacked [not stuck together]...and have a channel for electrical wires up through the middle...
The mushroom cap was poured into a wet sand mould on the ground ,which had a wavy textured pattern pressed in...
In winter it is a self cleaning bird feeder and has 3 small lights under the cap to shine on the pathway...
I have had great fun making different concrete stuff ..Maybe i'll post a pic of my worm ...he...heee...!
