Whole Rice Substrate, Verm. Cased

Straight rice cakes (not brf) were prepared as usual and crumbled into a margarine container. Thrown into the incubator for four days and then cased with a verm layer about 1/2" thick. Put back into the incubator for a couple days then into the fruiting chamber. I use the term Fruiting chamber loosly because it consists of a storage container with a piece of plexiglas on top. High tech I must say.
GT strain. Man I love the rizo's that are produced by this strain. You can tell the Myc is healthy from them.

does that mean that they were 100% whole rice 'cakes',Straight rice cakes (not brf)
i.e. rice spawn as in the 9er tek ?
if so,
plz share details on your procedures for prepping,
those look pretty good
and some have trouble with straight rice
so any info you could share
might be helpful.
how much water, how long cooked, etc. that kind of thing...
thx

First cook the rice.
Measure 4 1/2 cups of water and 3 cups of rice and cook them in a saucepan for 40 min.
or until all the water is absorbed.
Stir often so it will not stick to the bottom.
Use medium heat after it comes to a boil so it simmers and cooks.
Let it cool a bit and fluff it up with a fork.
Now just fill your jars as you would the PF Tek making sure it is not packed too tight.
Be sure you keep some fluffiness in the substrate.
Put a verm barrier on top, put the 4 holed lids on and cover with 2 layers of foil.
Then just PC for 30 - 45 minutes, let cool in the PC'er to room temp
then innoculate and incubate.
For the casing,
use a margarine container or one of your choice
and wrap duct tape around it to keep the light out of the sides.
Take the lids of the jars as you need them and scrape most of the verm off the top.
Put two in a zip lock and crumble them up then place them in the container.
Do this with the rest of the cakes.
Be sure they are crumbled well.
Spread them as evenly as possible in the container trying to fill all holes to make an even substrate layer about 1 1/2" - 2" thick.
Cover this loosly with wax paper.
Put the container back into the incubator for 3 days to recover.
Try not to look! ;)
It may take 4 days to colonize so use your own judgement.
After this, prepare enough verm to cover it about 1/2" or so by wetting it down until just about saturates.
You do not want it dripping.
Then stick it in the microwave for a bit if you are worried about sterilization.
Be sure to let it cool to room temp.
This particular grow used the verm strait out of the bag with tap water.
Then put it back into the incubator for three days, after which it can be placed into the fruiting chamber and fruited as usual fanning and misting.
There was no perlite used.
Just a Walmart tub with a plexiglass lid.
Talk about ghetto!!!
Rice, Verm, spore syringe, water, alcohol, tub and lid.
Very cheap.

Man, I can't get over how many aborts come from this GT strain. Found this with the cakes as well. I thought the casing would help but that is not the case.
Harvested on Monday. I am trying to force another flush out of this baby. The fruits sucked a lot out of this "cake". It shrunk up to about 3/4 of it's size. I should have dunked it but I will try just a heavy misting for now.

i edited it a bit to format

thx
OK. I am way to lazy to write up a complete tek with two fingers, so I will just give some details and I will try to answer any questions anyone may have.

Yeah Freaky, I noticed the B+ did this as well, but not to the same extent. It didn't produce the pinset like others but only 1/4 aborted. The EQ's didn't abort much at all.
I will be moving on to a different strain as we should. ;) I am busy so it's hard to have a constant grow going. Hard to experiment alot. I am trying to get as much experience as possible before I do the Pan thing. It may be a while yet.
Thank you for the compliment.

After the first flush, the cake shrunk up so much I didn't expect a very good second flush. So the "cake" was just put into the fruiting chamber again and I just left it. No dunking, no spraying, No fanning. I just forgot about it. 5 days later I noticed some pins forming. I jumped on the fanning and used a syringe and squirted lots of water on the verm to rehydrate it. Lo and behold the pins started to pop up again! Back to the fan and spray routine. Well, I managed to get a decent second flush despite the neglect. Not as good as the first, but look at how much the cake shrunk in the pics!
Needless to say, I didn't neglect it for the third flush! I used the syringe again to saturate the verm again and I am getting a massive pin set! I will post some pics of this flush when they grow a bit.
Pics of second flush. VVV:dance:

Buck, the fruiting chamber consists of a large tub with a plexiglass top. Thats it!! No perlite, air pump or auto-mister. Well, my fan and mister is made by Armstrong. ;) It is amazing what you can get away with.
Thanks for the kudos.
