Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I have a total dried weight from this meager grow is 72 Gr cracker dry. I finally had to throw it out as I felt sorry for it. I couldn't bleed it any more. LOL

Actually mushit, the paper towels do colonize at all the direct cotact points
with the cake , then slowly spreads thru the fibers...This becomes a minor problem cause u can no longer water those areas unless u add more paper.

Thanks Golly. Now that you mention it it is kind of like cardboard only thinner. I guess what I was trying to say is paper towels are really not a casing but something to provide a bit of moisture.

So much to learn and so little time...........................

Cap, Thanks for the compliment. This was an experiment that turned out great!!

Rice is highly suseptable to mold and contams.

This is why poeple don't use it very often.

We choose to grow on healthy grains and such.

They are much more mold resistant(grian ie,birdseed,rye-n-corn).I know cause i eat rice everyday being that i'm who i am but anyways.I've seen rice go bad within a few weeks.

whole brown rice has proved itself to be a great substrate for cubensis mushrooms. As you can see above.

The thing about rice is, it keeps things very simple. I don't think it can get much simpler that this procedure. The cost is very low as well.
As far as contams go, I have been doing this for a couple years now and have not had one contam! Nada! When you consider the amount of reports on grain contamination, the odds seem to lean towards rice..
Also, you can use just an ordinary pot with great success. No need for a presuure cooker. The rice is cooked before it is put into the jars so this would help warding off those nasties.
The one downfall of this method is the lack of quantities and slightly lower potency that you would get from using poo or straw, etc. But for someone that would like some fruits with a minimal amount of trouble, this is the one. :)

dry rice is no more prone to contams
than any other grain as far as i can tell,
i've had large amounts of both around plenty
for years now.

btw my conclusion don't come from any scientific studies but first hand experience.I have stated they are not facts but simple trial and error has made me come to this conclusion.

um, no, i can do math.
you stated that your 4 papertowel cased cakes yielded

first flush from 4 cakes at around 80 + something grams

that was wet weight, so dry = 10% of that number,
e.g. 8 dry between 4 cakes =
an average of 2 dry grams per cake per flush.
now

almost 60 grams mostly just from one cake

the DEC cake just gave ~60 wet, equivalent to 6 dry
for just one cake.
a cake that you even neglected and let dry out.

these were grown in no light lol i forgot, and the cakes were bone dry when i harvested this morning

and yet still
the 'per cake/flush' average
is ~3x as much as your previous results.
