I didn't know this thread existed until today and I just read it all. WOW- I'm glad some of us are thinking ahead. Survival is more precarious than life in the USA has led most of us to believe. One pervasive theme I've noticed: emphasis on groups-friends and family banding together for mutual benefit and gene pooling. Hopefully whatever survivalist gang comes to being out of this thread will be the group that repopulates the earth. Reminds me of that christian fiction series: Left Behind ANyone read these/have them pushed on him/her by religious friends/family. It is good speculation, and makes for good reading along these subject lines, even if yur not into the religious crap

stores of fire makers and spare parts..
great thread...thought no one thought this way much anymore 'ceptun us crazy hillbillies.
I feel better already.

Does anyone know of a way to stabilize gasoline for long term storage? dry gas fails after a while doesn't it?

Not sure about dry gas, contact the manufacturer? I do know methyl (& extremely high proof ethyl alcohol) can be substituted, burns cleaner as it was a popular way to beat emission tests in a state I used to live in.

Go to auto parts supply or True Value ask for gasoline storage stabilizer; also chain saw dealers..it keeps gas nice long time and from going to varnish in the saw carb ,,etc.
pretty amazing stuff..in saws use ash-less oil too..it helps..

isn't that stuff just alcohol to absorb the water and help it burn ?

what ever it is it helps to stabilize the gas mix..sometimes I don't touch a certain saw for a couple of years!!-the really big saws....yes I know..bad..bad..karl.. and it starts right up with no clogs or burps..hey
knock on wood...just fer luck..
maybe the stabilizer is alky too..?
gotta look that up somewhere.

I think I skipped a post..the dry gas is yes alky..to absorb the water..ala hippie.
stabilizer...don't know yet..and ashless oils
almost don't smoke if the carb is set right.
==============================================
BUT more to this thread.....

BTW..the easiest and fastest way to threats and potential doom I am afraid will happen some day soon..maybe not a good place but seems to go into this thread.
and that is..IF : with a rifle..say an .06... ammo cheap and easy mailorder,even,FMJ.. a cheap SKS..whatever.
a group of ONE or more goes out into the rural parts where the big power-lines grow..and well...
insulators are just ceramic..they drop the lines..if co-ordinated..and grid specific, esp. when extremes of climate makes for the demands of electric..we all go into...NEED real fast,,no heat..no cooling no refrigerators, no light, back to basisc really fast IF ya had a plan in the first place...! all you may have are a couple of hours before..nature takes over...
just look how long it took to fix the last big outage in the East..last year or so..
and this could go on and on with little or no way to guard against or prevent..it's on their list of the most dreaded terro-acts..but around deer season no body wonders who's a shootin' anyway..and there is no man-power in this scenerio..to help..or not enough to stop it.
and our gov. knows IT.
then what the survivalists have tucked away will be worth more than any gold..it will be life.
and this type of act could easily be a very real holocaust..for a very dependent and needy nation/world. what you think?
We are only as strong as our weakest links..
and as always the "weak" are always the most vulnerable.

"are we ready to make it in a post-holocaust world ?
anyone stock-piling food, water, ammunition ?
got a place in mind to bug-out to if the
fit hits the shan ?
i do, and i'm getting prepared too.
in the near future
i'll be posting a lot more of steps we can take to help ourselves and our families cope if the systems we all depend on go haywire
and it's every man for himself. "
=================================================
back to the base of this thread..
it does pay to be prepared not just wait..!
to wait is to be Too Late..have a plan.
Find a good hole to make it in. Try not to travel much, there will little sense in it and you will just be a moving, rich target.
Stock water, food, arms/ammo, first aid, shelter, like rolls of plastic, a good tent,
learn how a hogan is built, know how to make a solar-still,you can get water right outta the dirt! get a few good basic survival skill books and study them now. Seeds, tools, firestarters, spare parts, toilet paper nice till it runs out.! Soaps, chemicals esp. bleach, H2O2, etc. clothing, stock some fuels, stabilized gasoline, kerosene and know how to make your own alky! fer drinkin', fuel and trade,KNOW how to make real wealth goods, have a stock of them for barter..they'll "buy" anything you may need if you make it to this point!
Ya, tuck away prints too they should be in the seeds pack. tools include some equipment, like a generator, tiller, etc. but better have alternatives when your parts are gone..spark plugs, OIL, all depends upon how much room you have and can protect.
anyway..good luck if and when.
we'll all get together at our first rendezvous,,
how 'bout YOU..?

no secret that this race has become weak. I've said before that there are many ways that a terrorist could EASILY wreak havoc on our power systems, distribution networks ect. Maybe we sholdn't even say stuff like that, it makes me wonder if a crazy is perusing this board and wants to bring this culture to it's knees. I don't know if the term senecence (sp?) applies to anything besides shroooms but that process has def occured to this species, especially in this country where we have had it so easy for so long. Everyone has some skill or another in order to hold down a job, but true survival and self reliance would require much more than one small subset of skills, even if they make you 6 digits today, tomorrow you may freeze or starve for lack of resilience and adaptability. This is why I believe that the social side of it is even more important than the material. Not many people are as prepared as Karl sounds like he is, just lack of money, space, knowlege ect. That is why the group you end up with post 'holocaust' or wahteva you wanna call wahtever happens; may well determine your survival. A well balanced and well led small community I think will be more valuable than any amount of stockpiled material that you can put aside. Not that guns n gas are a bad idea, obviously, but that kind of stuff can be stolen, destroyed, ect., and could also cause your murder to occur quite fast, depending on how lawless this country becomes when the fit hits the shan and people run around starving and/or jonesing for sumthin and you got what they want.

i disagree.
all the instincts are still here,
people just aren't brought up
like we used to.
but we can learn and fast at that.

Yes, I'm sure that the resilience of homo sapiens will prevail in the long run, but the weak will die off like they always have in nature, and there will be no more ICU or any of that nonsense
I didn't know hippies could be Rage fans, LOL

the strong might be scum but they'll rise to the top cause of their 'skillz'
.
and don't get me wrong, I wish my list was filled up,, sometimes it is and mostly it isn't ..
like the water always has to be renewed.
some of my ammo is from the 1930's but stuill kept well it works really well..
always more things to do to ..fill the ark..
how does your ark grow..
the weak are the first folks you'll have to look out for..they're used to freebies now so they will be the most needie and with few skills..
and if I can get to the farm from somewhere else will be an adventure in it self..depends how much shit has hit the fan before yoiu react too.
as is..those who just play it by ear..odds are much worse than if a little on top of things. so anything is a step in the right direction.
I am still a bit like the grasshopper..who waits too long.Honey is the only food wich does not spoil.
