So I woke up this morning, checked a small tray that was fruiting, and noticed a couple of boomers that were just beginning to open up... I was running a little late for work, so I figured I'd pick them when i came home for lunch. At lunch time, I checked on them, and BOOM! They were both wide open, with a "dark shadow" underneath both of them. Now, I'm assuming that this "dark shadow" is really a whole boat load of spores, but it landed on some other little guys underneath, as well as all over the casing...

From what I've read, this is not good, but it's the third flush for this batch, so no bg deal I guess... My real question is what should I do? I picked them, and threw them in a drying tray, but are they ok to consume? and what about the little guys that got dusted with spores? What should I do with them?

they're fine to consume. both the ones that sporulated and the ones that got spores dumped on them ... spores are completely edible .... don't worry about it!

the only thing you might wanna do is dunk & scrape the surface lightly to wash the spores off before the next flush, because spores on the substrate can inhibit future pinning.

Sweet... That's good news... I kinda figured that, but wanted to ask and make sure! So just give the surface where I can see the spores landed a gentle little scrape, and i'm good to go?

How about the potency of these big guys? I've read a lot of stuff about how they lose something when they get big and drop spores... Anyone have any ideas?

You won't notice any difference. Just don't eat a 5g mushroom unless you know what you're getting yourself into...:)

Congratulations on your success

This.

Open caps don't make much difference, but I've heard once the veil begins to tear, the mushrooms don't produce anymore magic, so you might as well pull them. Spores don't make a lick of difference in the potency of the shroom. Albinos produce very few spores, and people say albinos are stronger then regular shrooms for some reason. Just my .02.

my strain produces almost no spores and i always wait for them to have a flat cap.i notice no difference when they are closed or open when i eat them.i do hate it when i've grown strains that make spores everywhere, they sure make my FC a mess to clean up!!! no problem with eating purple black spores they produce just not great to breath in that dust,it can give you allergies over time.

Now my question is, if we have shrooms with open caps over fans when they are drying, how is that not unhealthy, if the spores can give allergies? Just wondering, I was actually pondering this when I was laying out my first fruits to dry the other day :)

It is certainly not "healthy" to have open caps drying in your house. Any kind of spore sized debri in the air is damaging to your lungs, and certain people are much more sensetive to it than others with the alergies and what have you. Over time it could cause you some troubles.

this is not healthy big time!!!!! i've got real bad problems with allergies,to the point it was so bad i almost had to give up my fovorite hobby :( ive been exposed to a lot of mold through diffrent companies i ran or worked for over the years and now i'm in my late 30's its gotten way worse! got real ill from stachybotris for over a month cleaning out an old chinese brothel and i've never been the same since, same with 20+ other people who worked in the same place, everyone got sick! this hobby is not good for your health if you grow enough and don't keep a clean ship and vent all this crap outside you may develop allergies.i was told by a mycologist friend how i'd get allergies if i played around with this stuff long enough.i thought he was full of crap and maybe it happened to him,but it wouldn't happen to me??? ha! wish i was right. i hope i don't scare you off, just scare a little sence into you enough that you are careful and don't end up in the same situation as me.so what do i do? vent it outside my house .or dry it outside of where you live,a garden shed maybe a garage if your lucky.

I've been kinda wondering about that myself... I live in an apartment (so no garage and definitely no backyard shed!), and have built myself a little drying rack inside... It's got a small fan and it works great... But there's no ventilation system of any kind, other than an open window or two...

I'm wondering if this is going to be a problem, and how to solve it............??

It could be. Serious problem? Probably not. The best thing to do is to harvest before caps open, expecially open flat. Or you can grow penis envy or work on a sporeless clone. They do happen.

Hi can anyone share with me why they harvest at a certain point what is the optimum point to get the best out of the crop? and do you have to harvest whole flush.

Magic mushrooms contain the best potency by weight when they are smaller. So, pins and aborts have the most potency per gram, and fully mature mushrooms with wide-open caps have the least.

The general consensus is that the happiest combination of total weight and potency is just before the veil pulls away from under the cap.

BTW, what trouble are you having with the image uploader, exactly?

picture to show you..."" like the one in the middle ""

also you must to harvest them before opening, because when they spread spores, it's disturb mycelium... for the next flush..

This is one of my harvests a while back and i was told it had been the perfect time to do it.

http://mycotopia.net...=1&d=1305307311

And aborts, DUUUDE!

I made chocolates with shrooms form a "failed" grow, every pin in a good pinset aborted at 1,5" to 2" tall.
A trip on those chocos were a lot of consciousness explosions.
