It is awesome when your woodies pin up.....very nice work JACKOLANTERN..... As deep and aggressive as that bed is I would just put more layers of leaves or such on top as necessary......corn obviously is of interest.... Casing layers of soils especially fertilized potting soils or root dense pot leavings from flowers and etc ground up in layers about 1 inch thick. Mulches of all kinds....
Feed woody materials from time to time and keep damp.....keep doing exactly what you're doing both of you, ALL OF YOU.......Beautiful!
Field capacity mulch, soil, woody stuff, stems, grasses, sticks, chips, and etc....paper and cardboard too...in a bag...
Gotta love the rhizomes.....making a big old loaf of fungus....

I’ve never grown them before so I’m kinda winging it based on what I’ve seen ppl do and what some peeps have said.. boiled some hickory smokers chips for an hour. I also cut some small squares of cardboard and steamed them for ~ an hour
Mixed the cardboard with CV (didn’t have soil and want some water retention) @ 1:1 and then mixed that with the grain spawn
Then layered the chips and spawn mix in 8 cup glad containers (2) and capped them with a 1/4” layer of CV
I kept some spawn mix in a baggie so I can see how it recovers with the cardboard (

Enjoy the bizarreness of watching wood get demolished! Soon you'll be collecting ALL the wood.
Was so pumped yesterday rained so damn hard and was a cold rain. Woke up to frost. Hopefully they don't mind a little chill.
