As promised....

Pcorn jars: 1/2 pt, noc'd w/ Blu Mean and (2) 1 pt. jars noc'd w/ GT (I've heard much good about GT:)

Everything else pretty typical, 50/50 verm/coir, 24-hrs pasteurize sub via boiling water. 

Squeezed till field cap, etc, etc.

Layer of sub, crumbled cake, mixed thoroughly, top dressed w/ light verm layer. 

Incubation.

(btw, so far not really impressed w/ Pcorn. 4+ weeks to colonize...some cred given for recovery time after shaking tho..very quick, 12-24 hrs)

 

sry; long rectangular tub is GT, small black round tub is Blue M.

I just moved from a food desert to a place that is laden with organics, raw, and natural foods......So, I have been experimenting with different popcorns.

 

I had some jolly-time popcorn(non-GMO, but not organic) left over. I noc'd up some quarts with Orissa India's on the 16th of last month and they are only at about the 90% mark.......

 

Then, I picked up some white organic popcorn. Proceeded to noc some jars with OI on the the 20th of last month.....Those jars were spawned 2 days ago.

So they finished about 2-3 days before the jolly time jars and were innoculated 4 days later than the jolly time jars, so about a week quicker on the organic white popcorn......

 

Both batches were MS from the same syringe.

 

Next will be organic yellow popcorn, and organic multi colored popcorn.

 

 

Those trays are taking off, good luck with 'em.

IME corn alone doesn't fruit very well. I do much with invitros using WBS.

 

Here is an invtro jar using WBS hydrated in 15-30-15 bloom booster plant food.

 

With a rez effect since you aren't mixing spawn into a substrate and don't have to worry about the number of noc points, why don't you just use some cheap feed corn. It's much easier to prep too.

I guess I could, but like Jester mentioned above, they took over a month to be colonized  (noc'd 4/4 - spawned 5/6) to my satisfaction of 95-98%.

I may try Jester's white, non-GMO, orgranic Pcorn at some point in the future. I've got a few irons in the fire right now, esp. w/ spring/summer comin in full swing. :D

I've harvested everything that finished, dunked, and now need to "re-furbish" my FC (wash, clean, rinse, add htr+bigger fan,  etc. etc. blah blah)

It's gonna be a great weekend! :) I'll update pics of colonizing GT tubs tonight or tmrw...

btw, the sub (50/50 husk/verm) appeared a bit dry, so I taped off the holes and made them smaller)

It makes no difference what brand popcorn you use, IME.  I buy the cheapest I can find.  Don't spend more money than you have to for no good reason.

 

The tray looks pretty good so far.  You can mist it if you need to.

Getting tired of hitting the "like" button on your posts Jammer.

Costs is the main reason that I don't use popcorn. I'm paying $11-$13 for a 50# bag of feed or cracked corn. And I'm hearing the some of ya'll in the Mid western states are paying as low as $8 for a 50# bag.

Plus, IMO prepping the other corns is much easier.

 

Those that know me know I'm both cheap and lazy.

Yes there is a difference. Feed corn is large whole kernels, so it doesn't have many points of inoculation. But, I don't find that being issue if you are going to layer your sub/spawn.

 

Cracked corn is corn that has had the kernels broken into small pieces. So, there are many points of inoculation. Making cracked corn my corn of choice.

But, prepping these broken kernels is a double edged sword. While, they are easily hydrated, and only require a 24 soak, there is also a lot a starch released. If you don't wash all the starch off of the corn you will wind up with one big clump in the bottom of the jar.

Btw, I just PC'd a cpl 1/2 pts. of quinoa and a tspn. of fine "play sand" (as I've had only problems w/ verm added to jars) to wick any excess moisture. Experimental station here we come...

Put all the kids in daycare this afternoon, they were all being knaughty so I sent them straight to their beds, with only water and a few hrs of sun for them to ponder what they'll become

might add the larger tub finished just a day or two behind the small round one, even though there was 3 or 4 times the amount of sub)

I like your setup and great results so far! Is that an aquarium heater in your FC?
