Funny story about the Pope's mitre (a fancy word referring to a big goofy hat) that I don't think is apocryphal: Its ridiculous height apparently resulted from an escalating war of regal and dominant headgear between the Holy Roman Empire's Pope and the Ottoman Emperor, reaching its peak (so to speak) with the Suleiman the Magnificent's famous turban. Granted, Suleiman was not a religious leader per se but the line between organized religion and politics is imaginary.
It was strictly forbidden in the Ottoman Empire for anyone to wear anything taller than what the Emperor wore, but thanks to the escalating (literally!) hat war that was not a problem, lol.
