The center picture is pretty helpful. I did some zoom and crop so I could see it better. This doesn't look good Hr.

The areas above the graft that have a pale yellowish cast look translucent, and if you say they are soft this is pretty clearly some rot that has gotten into the base.

 

 

I don't think I would try to just remove the suspect areas. It's likely that there could be deeper spots forming that you cannot see.

If it was mine, I would remove the graft, and get a new clean cut so I could insure that there was nothing at the core. I would then trim the top of your graft stock to get the same kind of a clean cut, and quickly re-attach the graft to of course get vascular ring overlap. I would use the same proceedure as you did last time to secure the graft to the stock and let it fuse again. 

 

After the graft is secured, I would champer cut the area around it on the stock at a downward angle, but not too steeply.

 

I think you would have a better result by doing the re-graft. The yote is well hydrated so it should bond pretty quickly.

Thanks Sky! That's basically exactly what I was thinking too. Hopefully there isn't too much internal rot. But honestly, w/ the way my caespitosa throws off pups, it wouldn't be too big of a deal to cut a couple more off.

 

I actually have a wedding to go towards the end of Oct, and was thinking of bringing a grafted 'yote as a gift for the couple. And then another one or two for some other friends who are going to be there. So I may just do a grafting party after work tonight!

 

Any thoughts on rootstock? I have both the Ikaros and some open pollinated Kathleen/Pedro seedlings to choose from. From what I've read, it doesn't necessarily matter since people often graft to non-active species.

Being in the north my cacti get about 100 days of outside "summer" life....they seem to have adapted (more than likely it is I that have adapted) to it...

 

Still etiolation is an issue here since they just don't get the sun they obviously need.....

 

 

These pachanoi are in larger pots and get straight USDA zone 5b outdoor summer and they are growing like madness....

 

 

kactus-korners has turned into the need for a full blown herbarium...look at this Peruvian beast....I think I have a dozen or more of these still...

 

The first two pictures show a really nice pup on a bridgessi (pic 2) and the elongated cutoff sections laying on dry potting soil in the shade.....

 

Everything I cut grew pups or the main tip just turned upwards and the plants they were cut from also pupped tops and from the bases...

 

If one lives in the native location or habitat......and, IMHO, if you knocked the plants over and chopped them up with a mower....

 

I'd bet that you WILL wind up with a field of magic cacti....

 

Everything that I put into larger pots and give access to straight summer sun has grown massive....

 

I now have Pachs, Bridges, Peruvians, and several other species that are bigger around than my forearms (I'm no slouch either)

 

If I lived in their native environment I would have a forest of these beautiful creatures growing all around me.....

 

Sadly they must dry and go back into the darkness for the winter very soon....I feel bad for them actually...

Okay folks, good news and bad news:

 

The good news is that the grafting party was itself a success. We'll see how they fare. I feel good, think I got the v-rings all lined up.

 

The bad news: The suspect graft looked absolutely fine! I sliced it off the stock, and all the tissue was of uniform/symmetrical coloration, very slightly yellow, but mostly green. My theory is that a corked area was swelling w/ growth, and some of the skin underneath got a bit too much sun... maybe? It also could have just been very early stages of rot. The spot was softer than the rest, but not squishy feeling (perhaps I should have mentioned that before).

But I'm sure everything will heal up nicely!

I'm glad you did not find any sign of core rot. The re-graft will only set you back a little time, but it should give you some reassurance that you are not letting something spread internally.

I personally would rather have no doubts while it is early in the process, than lose a graft after I had invested some time in it's care.

Oh yeah, I 100% agree with that. Even w/o your advice I was probably going to try and re-graft it, so no worries there.

Got all my Cacti inside and stowed for the winter without bleeding for the first time! Last year I cut two feet off of the two problem children that I have had leaning together for the last two years to keep them from falling over. This year they both put out 4 pups each that will be growing on the right side to correct their off balance issues. My SPECIAL 4% Peruvian Torch is growing very tall and is well balanced and beautiful at about 5 ft tall. My two Peruvian torch Pachanoi hybrids are finally well rooted and growing this year. I only watered twice when it was really dry, trying to keep the alkaloid content good on all of them. I have one with very little alkaloids, but beautiful, and one that grows SO slow and is from a cactus about a hundred years old. The only one that has ever flowered for me. And one especially potent Peruvian Torch that assays at 4% and was a gift from a long lost member here. Glad I got them properly stowed away for the winter before those oddball early frosts that this area is known for.

I just saw something quite like that on Mallacht's youtube site in the identification help post.

 

I live in a small world apparently, had no idea how much cactus stuff is on youtube.  There are even some dopes telling how to do extractions. How long til those pages go down and they end up in jail???

 

OK, I'll be the devil on the other shoulder - YES - you should see how far down the rabbit hole it will take you.

I think there is a size issue. I couldn't get anything from this post, but when I went to your gallery, the first picture of the Juuls is so immense, it can't be viewed.

If you can size your images to download to a resolution of 72, and drop the size to under 1000 X 1000, they will be viewable.

Sheeeeeeiiiiit!!!!!! we got our first frost last night and a little bit early

 

I'm behind schedule getting all the cactus pots under an outdoor roof, usually targeted for October 1st, with the object of getting the soil dried out for the purpose of easy forcing hibernation in my basement somewhere around Thanksgiving. 

 

I'm done with my other chores for today so it's pot humping time.

Use slow and careful, planned movement my friend.

Its about all I can do now just to get as many as possible up on a raised elevation patio, so in the event of a heavy rain, they don't sit in water where the yard floods and drains slowly.

Try to protect against those spines................

Easier said than done I know. I have not managed yet to do a repositioning without at least 3 or 4 stabbings.

Hopefully by the time you read this, you are successfully relocated without incident.
