Not 100% sure where to start on this. Bucket of water, bleach (1/4 cup to 4 gals)? Soak newspaper, (cut to fit plastic shoe box).  Four hours later, squeeze out excess water and start layering in box? This post jumps around a bit.

I'm cutting paper and putting in bleach water. I see you thought you had oysters and had cubes, so the bleach and misting would have been okay for oysters but not for cubes. It worked though, and that's what we're trying to repeat.

The cube spawn fully colonized should not make much difference what grain/verm was used as long as it now prefers newspaper. Is that right?

1/4 cup bleach to 2.5 gallons of h2o. I just like using a clear container so that I can peek at it, it's a set it and forget it til it is 100% colonized.. I'll go first.

smallish plastic container, properly lazlo'd newspaper, a little over half pint of Orissa colonized popcorn.

Layered about 5 layers of each, ended with a newspaper layer and pressed hard, put in plastic bag and going to give an estimated 3 weeks before full colonization.

Okay, so far I've got:

lazlo2.jpg

Paper cut to fit box.

lazlo4.jpg

Fill with water and 1/4 (little less) cup bleach. Hold down with suitable weights, and let sit for 4 hours.

2.5 gallons of HOT tap water in a bucket is what Lazlo's tek calls for but IMHO, I think your way will be fine.

I used hot water, and almost 2 gallons. Next step in a couple of hours would be......? Drain the water/bleach, rinse? squeeze out excess? I like detail, and step by step. If you think I have deviated to far from what makes this a repeatable experiment, then I will bail and continue offsite. I don't want to interfere with your trial, but a reasonably close backup experiment would almost get you half way to having your own "tek". Catattack-tek!! Has a nice ring to it.

I took the newspaper and squeezed it into a ball and got as much liquid out as I could without hurting myself. I then put a layer of paper down, then spawn, then paper, then spawn, until I ran out of spawn then I finished with paper, pressed down to make it a block, threw it into a plastic bag and that's it.

I haven't really deviated enough from lazlo's tek to call it my own, I just use cubensis, a container that I can check the progress of the myc w/o disturbing it, and I mist the block after I birth it.

PS please feel free to post in this thread whatever your findings, thoughts, or success that you come up with. I love comparing notes.

Are you kidding? These are not oysters. There's no reason anything should work for cubes that works for oysters. Like you said, you were trying for what you thought were oysters, (or?) and ended up growing cubes with the same tek. I agree, that is a really plausible idea. Is it like Lazlo's, yes, in some of the details. But I am sort of following your lead on this, not looking up a bunch of other similar sites. If it works, you get the credit. As far as I'm concerned, and I've read quite a bit on this and other research sites, this is a new recipe. We can worry about that later, let'd grow some shrooms. I'm going to layer up.

Here's where I'm at. Squeezed out the newspaper log. Lost about a pint of fluid into the paper. Cut up two fully colonized 1/2 pint, pf jars, cubensis OAS inoculated 10/23. Layered them with newspaper 6 layers with a layer of paper on top and bottom.

Then I squished it down as much as my body weight could apply, put in some postal air bags to take up the air space. Vacuumed out the air and sealed it all in a garbage bag tied with the clorox bath string used on the paper log.

Put it up until it is ready for something.

My only thought is that you should loosen the tie (IMO) to allow for gas exchange, you don't have to be as careful about contaminations because most don't feed on newspaper, and your other subs were 100% colonized which makes them resistant too. now all we do is wait   :weedpoke:

Okay, that sounds good. I'll give it some air tomorrow, and keep monitoring it. My thought was to give it a chance to recover before opening it up, but if you think it's contam resistant, that would be too cool.

I've got to do a little research on this strain. I have never heard of OAS, and that's the only info I got on these jars. I have never grown it before, but it seemed almost as good as the CAM's which I have had great luck with over and over. I have a few (3) jars that are about a week from being fully colonized and ready, I might try one or two of them on a book grow. If these truly are contam resistant would be a pretty easy way to increase your area and yield.

Anyway, I put mine in a fruiting chamber so I can monitor humidity. It jumped right to 99 and stayed there since last night. Are we misting daily? FAE 2-3 times a day I remove the lid until the rH meter starts to drop, then I know the meter is still working. It jumps right back up when the lid gets put back on.

I think keeping it semi-closed is good in my situation with three other projects going in the same area I don't want them to start sharing bad stuff.

i would wait to put it into a fruiting chamber, when I thought I was growing oysters I just left it in a plastic bag until I had 100% (which only took about 10 days)

then I started misting it in the fruiting chamber after birthing. IMHO it needs gas exchange, not FAE, however I can't see anything you're doing as detrimental, except that it does need more CO2 whilst colonizing.

I'd wait on the book grow, my paperback is fighting trich and black mold..

One of the reasons I do unconventional grows is because I have PLENTY of spawn, and I have traditional grows that I don't post about, that being said I do enjoy a teammate on this thread!

Good to know. I too have quite a jar collection, and am always looking for something different. Collaborations are ideal for me, and I think for others who (one never knows) might actually be following our suggestions.

Do we even have a disclaimer at the beginning of this? Turkey Ranch will probably fix that if we don't.

I will let the CO2 build by not taking the lid off until I see some action, or a week. I could put it back in plastic, I thought it looked like you did that.

Question: do you have air gap around the edges or does it sort of seal to the plastic box?

I have no lid on my container, just the plastic bag

When I re-covered the box with plastic, the rH inside the chamber dropped to 73 almost immediately and stayed there. The room rH is 35- 50 so the 99 is was getting was the newspaper evaporating, now it is still adding but coming through the plastic. Very interesting. I wonder what is ideal. Any thoughts? I leave the lid on to protect other projects in the same (large) room. I can change that, or move it. Whatever I do, it will be documented so I don't want to go back and forth. If I take the lid off, I believe the rH will continue to drop inside to be closer to the relatively dry room humidity.

The air gap I was referring to was inside the shoe box, around the edge of the newspaper, sealing to the sides of the box. Mine is sort of a tight seal since the newspaper swelled a bit when wet.
