Lower temps just slow the metabolism down. They can and will fruit at lower temps, just not as well as they would in optimum temp.
Growing cubes on paper or cardboard is possible but you will most likely not harvest a whole lot of mushrooms. Most of time you will get a lot of pins that don't mature to a significant size. Sure is fun to watch though. I once had a mason jar with cardboard disks in the bottom noc'ed up with cubes. That jar sat in north facing window sill for years and would just keep popping up these lil half inch size shrooms, they would wither up and new ones would grow. The only thing I ever did to that jars was add a few drop of water once in while. The jar just kept growing year after year until I finally moved, I left it behind as I didn't want to have to pack it up.

I might not wait years, but I am curious how the mycelium in the paper has evolved, and whether it remains viable in a different substrate.

One mushroom is proof to me that it works. I agree with Coorsmikey that it might not be a production industry standard, but if his lasted years it does speak to the storage.

I wonder what you would have tried, having some of that cardboard spawn today.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Storage as you mentioned is and idea as long as you keep it hydrated. It's also great for cloning too. Also cardboard works well for cleaning up contaminated cultures. If you dig in the vaults you should find some of Hyph's threads with his hockey pucks.

Alright, I'll say it twice, Hyphaenation.....I did see a "puck tek" in the archives and didn't fully grasp the story in front of or behind that idea.

I'm not into long term storage right now, it's good to know and save for later.

So it seems paper and cardboard are kind of like a slow growing anti-biotic filled agar.

That might be just what I need to start a Chanterelle spawn.

They have an agar recipe for the patent that is really wild!! Bunches of anti-biotics and things that even I don't recognize.

Trees, roots, paper, yeast, mycelium that symbiotic. Supposed to be the biotec of the future.

They sell trees with spawn innoculated in the roots that are worth more than the crops on the trees.

I wonder what the seedlings of those trees costs here in the States.

It's not to compicated ... pressed substrate ...

Blend any substrate ingredients you want to use including paper-byproducts (cardboard) and press into a shape inside a vessel such as a plastic container. Then let colonize and 'birth from container to fruit. Just like cakes , but they are made from of bulk sub material.

@hyphaenation, do you make the "puck" and then introduce the colonized grain? Or do you just throw it all together in a blender and press it out?

I do it all different kinds of ways depending on what I'm adding to the substrate mix. Cardboard I definitley blend into a pulp. Same with the leaves. I usually let the material in the blender sit in a hot-water bath to pasteurize before blending and then I add it to other pasteurized materials such as horse manure, coir, burdock, garlic etc etc in a clean bucket or tub. This is when I add the colonized grains, although I have used many other things such as slurry , liquid inoculant , colonized chipped-plant stalk (garlic stalk, knotweed, cannabis stalk etc). You can blend the slurry in with the cardboard/sub when its cooled down and press out the extra moisture ... forming a "puck" (hence the name).

Mine are just starting to bust out all over.

This one is the biggest so far, but I'm thinking about what Hyphaenation is doing with puck technology, and I need to free up a fruiting chamber for a bunch of jars that are now ready.

I might just have to leave it alone, and buy some other fc's since it is going and I don't even want to mess with it until completion.

Decisions, decisions.....

I'm actually about to take a nice, strong mushroom and spawn it to some cardboard. This thread is awesome. Thanks for sharing.

I am not getting alerts when people "tag" me, huh. Wonder why? It's working for other people? It may be my profile settings, I will check.

I like the places where this is going, ever since Hyph's pucks, I have wanted to see more people try similar things. I think I will be using paper and leaf pulp in a bunch of my edibles grows this spring. Love getting ideas.

Happy, that looks great! Your gonna get at least a few fruits off that project.
