Well, not really. This has been done many times before. It's still pretty neat though! My girlfriend and I grow oysters on old phone books and newspaper.

I can't wait to see if it colonizes! Then the even more fun part, seeing if you can get fruits!

lazlo's newspaper tek is 1/4 cup bleach to 2.5 gallons of hot tap water soak, and TR, it's been done before, however, my oyster grow was a bust (sorta) because it grew cubes... monster cubes in the first flush.. soooooo shirly mcClain tek..

I don't wanna bump the year old thread, but on that newspaper tek link, the last post was never answered and seems like a real decent idea. They asked if you could buy oysters and use them mycelium from that to grow. I've never even bought mushrooms before and idk if this is even a viable question.

I have never done it but it has been done. My understanding is if it has fuzzy mycelium growth at the base, that's what you are looking for. Maybe hyphae or bev will chime in..

Currently growing out oysters and enoki that I took samples from bought at grocery store.. does that answer the question pastafarian? Lol if not then yes. Is your answer. I think you want them to be as fresh as possible but I know my enoki were the last on the self and had been sitting there a few days the myc is slower then the oysters but both are still coming along nicely.

you can grow oysters bought from a store on paper, but the yield will not be

nearly as high as if you would include grains. it also ups the risk of contamination

because IME it takes a long time to colonize the paper without grain.

it's a little early for good job but the colony is growing! It was literally like 10-20 kernels of corn.
