Here is a look at the Balsam logs that grow tree ear here :)
You can see the tree ear and the crust fungi that grows first breaking down the bark and ?? It was said to be a yeast I think??
Here is the crust fungi .... note the purple color and the teeth instead of a flat sport surface or gills or folds.....
notice how the bark is just starting to break down and there is only one tree ear to the top right
notice the bark is really broken up now and the tree ear is thriving ...... the ears do come from cracks in the bark ....... think of it this way the holes in the bark make an entry point and or growing out of point.... like plugs put into the log you need to peirce the bark to get the spores at the wood so the mycellia can grow until the food is gone or almost gone then they will bloom and spore to fly to a new ready log..... tons of spores flying threw the air or on in the ground for years waiting for the right time just like the seedlings waiting to sprout after a tree fall to create more light and space / food to provide life from death .......I love mushrooms for this very purpose this time of year eating up all the dead stuff a dead log full of life for years before it disappears :) I have a few stump pictures that are very cool :) here is one
??
Virginia creeper high in the trees ...lookin cool against the green

These were growing on a log (standing still) near the above mushrooms .....
and these were growing on a log laying on the forest floor in the same area
notice how its deformed....its not the only one
here is some small deformed ones
maybe this or these mushrooms eat more then what was previously thought more poking around is necessary and to prove it would need to be tested??

Here is what mushroom expert has to say about these mushrooms .... Entoloma abortivum
http://www.mushroome..._abortivum.html
and Tom Volk fungi has a more in depth of this discussion on whos eating who ;)
http://botit.botany....gi/sep2006.html
The aborted Entoloma are really yummy!! They are referred to as Shrimp of the Woods... They are kinda of rubbery if you don't cook them right but if you brown them, they have a texture that is almost exactly like shrimp... They are one of my favorite foraging finds....!!!!
