Here is a before and after with the same pic, thought the crop is slightly different.

It amazes me how many 'different' pics I can get out of the same master photo by changing zoom and crop.
This is also from the same master.

yup, the software is amazing. some pics respond better than others.
that's a very low light photo so it's limited in the range of adjustment. you'll have others that freak you out at the dynamic range of light within the file.
I'm dumping an awful lot of info into this thread, the sum of about three years of a steep learning curve. don't get to feeling overwhelmed. this shit takes time, time, and more time.

OK Juthro, here's a learning assignment for you
"Oh great, now the asshole's giving us homework"
Next sunrise meter the sky while in Auto mode. remember the readings for the shutter and aperature.
Take a pic.
Select M mode on the dial on top of the camera. Set the shutter speed and aperature as you saw them in Auto.
Take a pic
Then use the adjustments to either 1. slow the shutter speed e.g. from 125 down to 60 or 90, leave the aperature where it is
Take a picture
and then
Then use the adjustments to 2. put the shutter speed back to the one from Auto mode. Then fiddle with the other adjustment to lower the aperature number by two settings e.g. from 11 down to 6
Take a picture
At your leisure open them in the editing software and see the difference in the pics
In cases 1. and 2. the overall pic should be brighter. In the second manual mode pic you should see much more detail and light in the foreground and in between the trees.
This does not necessarily improve your photo. It will show you how adjustments in the amount of light, controlled always by relative speed of the shutter, and relative opening of the aperature affect your image
You'll know you're learning your camera when you can predict how an image will look when you've made the settings in the Manual mode. It's how all the old school guys like Ansel Adams had to work. They didn't have fancy schmancy digital whizbang devices like ours. But they sure as hell knew how to work their tools

And yes Juthro, those are indeed my favorite colors for sunrise or sunset. Great pictures !

maaaaaan, I love Colorado. No wonder Ansel hung out there. You can point the camera at the dirt around your feet and get good pics
This is at Blue Mesa, between Gunnison and Montrose, on Highway 50 every inch of which is blow-your-mind interesting and pretty
