@KC, will you explain and/or go into more detail on the beet pulp? How you arrived at it, benefits, is it "waste" from juicing, etc?

it's a well researched mushroom growing substrate that is an agricultural

waste stream and gets sold as horse feed.it's sold by both tractor supply

and rural king. u can buy it in a pelleted or shredded form, i prefer the

shreds in this instance, the pellets take too long to soak up water.

Beet pulp is common where I come from, there is a sugar factory in Nyssa Oregon and they have tons and tons of excess beet pulp daily, we used it to add to silage for feeding the cattle over the winter, we also used a lot of apple pulp from the apple cider factory. You could get the beet pulp for about $6 a ton and the apple pulp for about $10 a ton. Mix that with some chopped hay, chopped corn stalk and seal it in plastic and it becomes a great silage for winter feeding cattle.

PS....

I thought that I might add on the BE Biological Efficiency that not only does water add weight to the mushroom or any plant for that matter, but so to does the carbon that plants gain through the respiration of CO2 from the atmosphere. This is how we can harvest 1,500 pounds of wheat an acre while only adding 60 pounds of fertilizer per acre to replentish the soil. True, our modern farming techniques do not fully replenish the soil, but the actual physical weight of soil constituents incorporated within plants is amazingly small compared to the harvested product. Another one well known here, the winter snow adds a measureable amount of nitrogen to the soil each winter, which is then incorporated within the plants but is not considered a part of soil weight.
