Hey everyone,
One of the best things about living in the PNW is all the types of things that grow wild here.
I've been picking blackberries in the neighborhood around my work. There is a lot that was overgrown with them (picked just in time, finally got torn out) and plenty of other spots where I can freely pick them.
Ate all we could and still had a big container of them and didn't want them to go to waste so, Internet to the rescue, and trying my hand at jam.
Halfway thru and all looks good. Pictures and link to the method I used included.
Next up will be applesauce, but for now... blackberry jam;

Awesome!
Always good to see you pharmer. Knew you'd appreciate this :-)

Wish I had my own patch of ground to plant some stuff (someday) but am glad for what I am able to find around if I keep my eyes open.
So many apples, and people looking to get rid of them, that I'm making applesauce next.

Going to be a lot of toast being eaten (and will have to try on ice cream ) as this stuff tastes amazing.

Been watching a lot more YouTube of late. We ditched the cable and just use the Internet for entertainment, both downloaded or from Netflix, but watch a lot of documentaries and their are endless amounts there and I've come to see that there are tutorials for just about anything one can imagine out there ;-)

The wife made some Blackberry cobbler with some I picked in my own yard. The wife had been wanting me to get rid of them and I kept putting it off, now they are loaded down with ripe berries. Good stuff!

Blackberry cobbler sounds fantastic Coop. Bet she's glad you procrastinated just a little bit eh? lol

Everything came out as perfect as I could ask for, enjoying some toast and jam for breakfast this am.
Always liked blackberries and love that they grow wild around here. Found a big patch by my work and started taking my breaks by it and picking.
Shared this on FB and a friend posted the wiki on them and I found out how good they are for you. From antioxidants to polyphenol and gallic and egallic acid. List goes on.
Once I heard this I started picking like I was working :-)
Ended up with more than I could eat and am glad I took the time rather than let them go to waste.
On to the next project!

Looks good. We got apricot and apple for free in an abandon lot by our house.
Broke down and went to a u pick for our blackberries.

Recipe looks good
I like doing a low sugar jam/jellies/preserves and mixing it into plain or vanilla Greek yogurt

Shadowlord, spoon some of the jelly over top of softened cream cheese, it makes a great spread on crackers. We make jelly also, half of the batch is sweet and the other half is spiced with peppers for appetizers. :tinfoil:

Just bought 4 blackberry bushes for 4.99 each on sail. Look a little rough but should be ok.
Making sure I have this book marked.

GLP
great idea for my fermented chili paste mixed with blackberry jam.

You've already got most of (if not all) the equipment, Psy, you might also think of making some blackberry wine....

And from my experience, blackberry's don't need much in the way of TLC before they try to take over your entire growing area. If they survive the winter they will be hard to get rid of, even if you try.

Juthro
Never an apology needed my friend ! Always get good info out of your posts!
Just recently have gotten obsessed with berries and containers. Partly for reasons mentioned of the nutrients that are found in them and the ability to wander out and pick and eat fresh vitamins. That and other bear digs making jellies/jams/preserves ect!
