FDA Warns People Not to Use Kratom, Citing 36 Deaths
The agency says the herbal supplement may not be a safe alternative for opioids.

Nov 15 2017, 12:42pm

The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday issued a public health advisory about what it calls the “deadly risks associated with kratom,” a plant that many users have turned to for relief from chronic pain, anxiety, depression, and PTSD. Others have claimed it helped wean them off opioids by offering the same effect but without getting addicted. The advisory warns people not to use products containing the plant or it psychoactive compounds, citing "concerning reports" about it. In a statement, FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb called the “increasing use” of kratom as an opioid alternative “extremely concerning,” and says the agency is aware of reports of 36 deaths related to the use of kratom-containing products and reports of kratom being laced with opioids.

The FDA’s statement will ring familiar to anyone who’s followed the kratom story. In late 2016, the Drug Enforcement Agency announced a plan to temporarily place kratom on the list of Schedule I drugs. Those are substances, such as heroin, LSD, MDMA, and, yes, marijuana, that the agency considers unsafe, with a high potential for abuse and no accepted medical use. After thousands of public comments denouncing the potential kratom ban, the DEA backed down in October 2016, deferring to the FDA.

Now the FDA has begun to signal how it will treat kratom. Tuesday’s statement compares the plant to opioids, saying it has similar risks for addiction, abuse, and even death. It’s hard to say how the agency has reached that conclusion, given that in the same statement it notes that kratom hasn’t been through a formal evaluative process. (Last year, the DEA refused to release the data it used to conclude kratom should be temporarily banned.) The FDA also takes issue with this unapproved product being marketed as a treatment or cure for serious conditions and called for more research.

Andrew Kruegel, a Columbia University pharmacologist who’s studied kratom, previously told Tonic that chemicals in the plant affect the same brain receptors as opioids such as morphine and heroin. Those drugs have a potentially lethal side effect: slowed breathing known as respiratory depression, even to the point that users stop breathing and die. For many users, kratom offers potent pain relief without that risk. As for the risk of addiction and abuse, Kruegel said there’s no scientific consensus—and that making kratom a Schedule I drug would inhibit research, making the question that much harder to answer. He’s also skeptical about the deaths the FDA has attributed to “the use of kratom-containing products,” telling HuffPost that there’s simply not enough proven science to say for sure.

Susan Ash, who was formerly addicted to opioids and founded the American Kratom Association, a nonprofit advocacy group, told Tonic via email that kratom is saving lives. “Not only has kratom been used thousands of years around the world safely,” she says, “I️ have personally witnessed thousands of people kick their opiate addictions thanks to this plant, without any dangerous side effects or dependency issues.”

Meanwhile, in addition to its public health advisory, Gottlieb said in a speech that the FDA would work with the DEA to decide how kratom should be evaluated and scheduled. (Kruegel said earlier this year: "I don't think the kratom plant itself is ever going to become an FDA-approved medication," given the difficulty in standardizing its chemical composition—a problem similar to what we see with marijuana). In remarks to the agency’s Office of Criminal Investigations made yesterday, Gottlieb lumped kratom in with illegal opioids, vowing to do more to stop mail shipments of both at the border. The public health advisory notes that the FDA has already “exercised jurisdiction over kratom as an unapproved drug” and detained hundreds of shipments of kratom at international mail facilities.

The FDA and Gottlieb acknowledge the potential good kratom may do. “While we remain open to the potential medicinal uses of kratom,” its statement reads, “those uses must be backed by sound-science and weighed appropriately against the potential for abuse.” But that research will be much harder to do if kratom is placed on Schedule I—and if kratom is continually tied to the opioid epidemic.

Dear Kratom Warriors,

Last week, the FDA dropped the other shoe to ban kratom that we all knew was coming.

Faceless bureaucrats at the Food and Drug Administration told the new FDA Commissioner, Scott Gottlieb, to issue a ‘Public Health Advisory’ on kratom, justified by outright LIES that kratom carries similar risks as opiates, including addiction and death, and other mischaracterized scientific claims.

Major media outlets such as CNN, CBS News, NBC, NPR, Fox News and others picked up on the advisory, further spreading the FDA’s lies--all part of their campaign to threaten our hard work to keep kratom legal and available to you.

The most troubling coverage of the FDA Advisory came in the form of a CNBC interview with FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb, who lied on air and described kratom is an ‘opioid analogue, setting the stage to include kratom as a banned substance in the SITSA (Stop the Importation and Trafficking of Synthetic Analogues) Bill.

SITSA, if passed, would give Attorney General Jeff Sessions unchecked authority to ban any substance without any medical or scientific review; for a “temporary” period of FIVE YEARS, and exempt from a judicial or legislative challenge during that span.

FIVE YEARS!

AKA was criticized for ‘causing a panic’ by some in the kratom industry for coming out strong against SITSA, arguing the bill wouldn’t impact kratom given that it is not an analogue of an opioid.

…but we kept up the fight, confident that the FDA & DEA would make a move to classify kratom as an analogue so they could easily ban it under SITSA.

…And after issuing the public advisory last week, FDA Commissioner Scott Goetlieb went on CNBC and did just that.

https://www.youtube...._eid=30b2a7e7e0

We warned from the beginning that the FDA and the DEA are ready to ban kratom--- and classifying kratom as an opioid analogue would give them justification for doing so!

This video proves that the FDA will do whatever they can to lend support to an outright DEA scheduling, even if it means misrepresenting the science and lying to the public!

Without a doubt, the FDA’s Public Advisory was issued NOT out of the concern for the well-being of citizens, but for the sole purpose of influencing public sentiment, regulatory actions and ultimately, push forward legislation to ban the use and sale of kratom in states across the country.

Our lobbyists in Washington D.C. have told us that kratom opponents will use this advisory and these lies as fuel for their efforts to accomplish a complete ban and restrict your access to kratom completely.

Warriors, kratom opponents think they have victory in sight, but we can’t let them win!

This is our plan to fight back. Will you join us?
•On November 18th, the AKA filed a formal petition to review and correct the FDA’s Public Health Advisory on kratom and then demand to reverse it completely.
•Add to our team of lobbyists in Washington D.C., to reverse this FDA advisory. In New York, Florida, Illinois, and several other states our lobbyists will turn up the heat to stop any ban on kratom in those, while protecting your access throughout the rest of the country.
•Reverse the state bans on kratom
•Increase the pressure on legislators and government agencies, and we will provide you with tools to help us. We are facing fights at the federal level and in three states, and we will be calling on you to take action to respond to legislation and to dirty tricks like last week's FDA advisory, as they happen.
•An aggressive Marketing/Communications effort to mobilize all warriors, social media followers, vendors, their customers and the general public concerned about America’s current health crises. Our strength is in numbers. We currently have 50,000 warriors who are turning up the pressure. We need many more!
•More scientific research! We want to step up AKA’s investment in partnerships with the medical research community and be armed with scientific data that proves the benefits of kratom, and dispels the lies that the FDA & DEA want the public and lawmakers to believe.
•A Media Campaign to counteract the false claims spread by the media and inject the personal stories of warriors like you whose lives have been changed by kratom
•Publicize, through all channels, the science and truth behind Kratom. The science is on OUR side!

We simply cannot wait, and neither can you. We must act immediately and deploy our team across the United States to tell the truth about kratom, tell your stories to the media, put pressure on these bureaucrats and reverse this attack and these lies against kratom.

We have shown that together, we can win! We won our fight with the DEA when they wanted to criminalize kratom consumers last summer, and we will win against the FDA’s efforts to restrict the use of kratom if you support us in this biggest fight yet.

A war of this magnitude against lawmakers, bureaucrats at government agencies and outside influencers, isn’t going to be cheap, but we’ll do whatever it takes to win.

Will you?

I always come around and edit in the content of links posted so when they become broken links we're not left with a thread that we'll is unreadable. So many broken links in a lot of older threads that at one time was an interesting read, when they become broken links and the actual content is not posted there is not much left to read but missing info. Plus the convenience of not having to leave or open another tab to read something else is desirable for many people. Unfortunately I went to add the content here like I do any other time, and at least from where I am and the current time it appears the link is already broken before I was able to save the content.:(IMG_2849.PNG

Does anyone here on this forum really get surprised by this anymore? I'm going to do, live, and consume plant products, and be who I want, and simply stop giving a single shit what these assholes in Washington say about, or make "laws" about anything.

They, are not my king, my boss, my god or goddess, and what they say is dribbling shit.

We need to get the proper perspective here. They are the law breakers. They are the thugs, the brutes, the scumbags.

Let us pay them no further lip service.

Kratom Warrior:

The "Dark State" FDA bureaucracy has enlisted FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb in their war on kratom.

Make no mistake, the FDA staff already knows that kratom is not dangerously addictive, nor is it unsafe when used responsibly by consumers.

They have the science in hand, but they want to bury it so that they can renew their war on dietary supplements and herbal products just like they did back in 1993.

And the truth does not matter to them.

The career staff at the FDA is hell-bent on expanding the regulatory reach into the lives of every American, and kratom is their latest target.

We have to fight back, and we have to expose the FDA Dark State for every lie they are telling right now about kratom.

The American Kratom Association (AKA) did not shirk from the fight that the FDA started on August 31, 2016 when they enlisted the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to try to use their vast emergency powers to schedule kratom.

We won that battle, but every one of us knows how difficult it is to fight the federal bureaucracy.

When the dust settled, one of the leading DEA officials admitted that they thought that the "FDA duped us into doing their dirty work."

We learned last week that the FDA is back to their dirty tricks and they have sent an 8-Factor Analysis to the DEA that demonizes kratom; claims kratom is directly responsible for 36 deaths; and that kratom is an "analogue of an opioid."

None of that is true.

AKA PRESS CONFERENCE LIVE FROM ATLANTA AT 11:00 AM ET
&
PETITION DRIVE
SIGNATURES ON
"OPEN LETTER TO ROBERT PATTERSON"

THURSDAY 11/30/2017
CALLS TO LEGISLATORS

It is critical that we fight this battle, first with the DEA, and then with the Congress to let them know what the FDA is trying to do. We have to expose the true FDA agenda.

But, first things first.

Beginning at 8 AM Eastern time on Tuesday, and continuing until 4:30 PM Eastern time on Tuesday, we need you to call the Acting DEA Administrator, Robert W. Patterson, and tell him that he should "Double-check the science on the FDA 8-Factor Analysis; it does not add up!"

Please be respectful, but firm. Tell the agent who answers the phone that the American Kratom Association will be sending a report to Administrator Patterson that proves that the FDA 8-Factor Analysis is JUNK SCIENCE.

Tell them that we want Administrator Patterson to double check every claim in that FDA 8-Factor Analysis.

In fact, not a single person has died from kratom use. It is only when it is mixed in with toxic doses of opioids or other illegal street drugs that people die.

The phone number for Administrator Patterson is 202-307-8000.

If the line is busy, please keep trying to call back.

We need to send the clear and unmistakable message to Administrator Patterson that the DEA is about to get duped again by the FDA.

The FDA wants the DEA to do their dirty work.

But the DEA can stop the FDA in their tracks by rejecting their JUNK SCIENCE.

The FDA wants to protect the multibillion-dollar opioid pharmaceutical industry, and they want to force anyone who believes that kratom is an effective alternative to opioids to file a New Drug Application.

That is how the FDA Dark State expands their regulatory power.

They get to set the ground rules, and once they get control of kratom by classifying it as a drug rather than a natural botanical product, we lose.

The FDA Dark State knows an NDA costs hundreds of millions of dollars to file with the FDA, and it takes nearly a decade to get an approval for any new drug.

The only incentive for paying all of that research and development money is to get a patent.

That way drug companies can charge exorbitant fees to the American public because they have no competition during the patent period.

But the dirty little secret that the FDA knows all too well is that kratom is a natural botanical plant that cannot be patented.

And the FDA wants to dupe the DEA into thinking that they have to schedule kratom because it is dangerous and it kills people.

Sound familiar?

It should.

It is déjà vu for the DEA.

But we won that battle last year by speaking truth to power.

We need to do it again now!

The second step in our plan will take place on Wednesday.

AKA will collect signatures on an "Open Letter to Acting Administrator Robert W. Patterson" that will show the DEA that there are tens of thousands of committed kratom advocates who will protect and defend our freedom to make our own choices about our health and well-being.

I will send the link to that "Open Letter" tomorrow, so please watch for it in your email box.

The third step in our initial battle will take place on Thursday.

That is when I will be asking each of you to pick up the phone and call your Senators and Congressmen.

We are going to fight back every way that we can by telling the truth, and exposing the lies that the FDA is peddling for their own self-serving agenda to expand their regulatory powers.

On Wednesday, Dr. Jack Henningfield will join me in a media conference in Atlanta where we will take on the Georgia Medical Examiner who is peddling the same misinformation and lies that the FDA has fed to virtually every state and local medical examiner and coroner in the country.

The AKA will take this fight wherever it has to be fought.

The bottom line is that kratom is safe when used responsibly.

The science is clear that kratom is not dangerously addictive, with an addiction profile similar to caffeine and coffee.

The truth is, if kratom is banned, those who have chosen to use kratom as an alternative pain management option will be forced to go to dangerous and deadly opioids.

A ban on kratom will actually increase the death toll of opioids.

I cannot tell you how grateful I am that you are willing to join this fight with us.

Would you do me the additional favor of sending me an email confirming that you left a message for Administrator Patterson.

That email address is: [email protected]

I want to be able to share that information with our friends on Capitol Hill so that they know the we are asking the DEA to double check the science on the FDA's 8-Factor Analysis, because it does not add up.

I want to let Congress know that thousands of people have called the DEA.

Let’s start our “Virtual March on Washington” this week.

Trust me, it is only the beginning of the fight.

Thank you for your commitment to keeping kratom legal in America.

Chairman
American Kratom Association

The Sunday night CtoCAM with George Knapp was all about the war on pain sufferers.   The war on opioids is a public relations war and the DEA is hassling so many doctors who specialize in pain treatment, as well as pharmacists, that the right to relief is disappearing.  I heard most of the four hours and never heard kratom mentioned, though I did miss some of it.

While the FDA is using the CDC report to crush kratom, guess what else it's doing.

While Congress hasn't accomplished much in 2017, it did manage to pass a budget resolution -- and within that budget, a sum of $3 million stands out.

Congress appropriated that $3 million to fund the Agricultural Biotechnology Education and Outreach Initiative. That's a partnership between the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and the Department of Agriculture (USDA) "to provide consumer education on agricultural biotechnology and food and animal feed ingredients derived from biotechnology."

What they're really talking about is a promotional campaign for genetically modified organisms, or GMOs.

There are two major flaws with this plan.

First, the FDA is tasked with building a campaign around the "safety and benefits of crop biotechnology." But what about the risks, concerns, and unknowns?

Leaving those out means using government agencies and taxpayer funds for corporate propaganda. It benefits companies like Monsanto, Dow, Dupont, Syngenta, and Bayer, which collectively earn billions of dollars from these technologies, but does little to inform consumers.

Alder, interestingly Heroin was invented/promoted by Bayer and Smith (which became Glaxo-Smith-Cline) as a "Cold Medicine", right next to their aspirin.

bayer-heroinwerbung.jpg heroincough.jpg

But of course Kratom isnt theirs, is not controllable by them, so we cant possibly allow  it!

And of course we know they still make Heroin, just with lots of different chemicals attached so they can say it's "better"...
