For Myc: You mentioned running scripts so I figure you are up for copy and paste in to the terminal ....

20 Things to do After Installing Ubuntu 18.04 and 18.10

https://itsfoss.com/...g-ubuntu-18-04/

Have you opened up the application "Terminal" before? I believe they give options for doing these tweaks through the Software Centre as well to avoid the terminal if its to much...

Regarding not seeing an off-button... the newest versions of Ubuntu use a unique desktop that doesn't really use traditional toolbars as we know them. There is a lot of right clicking and setting up the menu on the left (it's moveable). There are many custumizations as I mentioned. Have a play around and see how you like the menu system as is , get to know it etc. If you prefer "old-school" toolbars you can install those Gnome extensions within your current Ubuntu setup. It's pretty easy. If you change your mind you can switch back.

How to get the Windows Look & Feel on Ubuntu 18.04

https://vitux.com/ho...feel-on-ubuntu/

You see in there that there are also things called themes which make the look and feel of your desktop different (I prefer dark windows / menus)

Thanks for that Hyphae!

I followed the link and installed everything that was relevant to my situation. I just ignored the laptop stuff since I don't own one.

That didn't take long at all. Now I'll be exploring all the changes.

I'm playing with ideas as to how to access my windoze files - photos, MP3, etc.

Thinking about just using an ectopic hard-drive (like the ones used for automatic backup) and setting it up for both programs to "fetch" from. Unless there's something easier. -- I probably won't mess with this until the weekend so as to be well rested.

Any suggestions you may have are welcome.

Thanks guys for the suggestions and for prompting me to make the switch.

You can access your windows folders and files really easily. It's just a matter of setting up that drive to be recognized and often it automatically is already.

I may still need to do another restart. I didn't see the "home folder" option pointed to in the video. All I have is a file-cabinet icon (the one in the video is a folder icon).

I did find another interesting work-around. Since I am using a wired ethernet connection back to my router - Ubuntu "sees" my router on the network............and the subsequently attached ectopic hard-drive (which is also attached directly to the router). I'm pretty sure since this PC is also network connected, I can locate the ectopic hard-drive and transfer all of the windoze files I want backed-up. Then, I can access the ectopic hard-drive through the network using Ubuntu.

I couldn't just sit here with a new toy and not explore. ;)

Will keep playing. If my hypothesis is correct, I should be able to access the files from the PC I've been backing-up on the hard-drive all this time. We shall see.

Edit:

Blamo!! I found the files through another pathway.

Open "files" - the "file cabinet" icon

Locate "Other Locations" in the left menu

From there "On this computer" contains the files I needed. No extra effort required. I just tested a music file and it plays fine. The video you provided did the trick.

Thanks Hyphae!

So........I am really digging the upgrade - at long last.

Surfing and watching is not so different. Listening to music is a bit different - I may go and search for a clone of W=dox media player - (one sweet program if I must admit) - I'll miss it for sure). (and I'll be including those words in a soon-to-follow search query)

Otherwise, for the hours committed to research and work-arounds,, this install of an entirely new OS is on-par with the hours required for changes made during each windoze update. That Includes accessing old files, setting new preferences, updates, etc, so on, and so forth.

I cannot BELIEVE I wasted so much time acclimating myself to the compromises presented by other systems. But thank goodness for the training microsoft, you're the best??? giving me a college-level education in reversing your constant fuckery???  party on dudes!!!!

Ubuntu!

Reading the article, seeing how they saw Linux as stealing their intellectual property, I don't forget how Gates and Allen got started, by stealing what they stole, fair and square.

Isn't that the truth!

Xerox developed the first mouse windowing environment and they Jobs ended up beating them to the punch even though Gates stole it.

Gates bought dos for 50 grand and then marketed it and the rest his history on the O/S side.

Gates took Unix code and then Tandy Corp paid him to develop what was known as Xenix and he ended up turning into his internal systems after Tandy paid for it.

IBM hired Gates and paid him to develop OS/2 and he turned it into Window NT.

Hell I can't remember all the shit they stole.

"Ballmer: I may have called Linux a cancer but now I love it"

And then they went after Open Source and got their hands in it via lawsuits / negotiations and have incorporated it in Windoze 10 for developers.

Thieves!

How about their old attacks on Chromebooks and their loss of the Education market?
I remember their old ads about how worthless Chromebooks were without an internet connection.

Google owns the education market with Chromebooks and their free grants to non-profits with Google Suite.

I started with CPM and them went to DOS 2.1 and stuck with them and their upgrade bullshit clear through Windows 7 due to my work in the Corparate world. We were actually forced away from Novell and Unix over the years.

Fuck Micro$oft!

Richard Stallman Interview on the History and Ethics of Free Software

https://www.youtube....h?v=Gnw_K5DPkbc

Man I got to see Stallman speak at Utah State University many moons ago!

It was a small gathering for the computer club there so it was up close and personal.

I remember him clearly when he came out in a robe and wore a cap made out of the platter of an old mainframe hard drive.

I was in my late 20's and his influence shaped me and I became an avid follower.

He still had a key to the lab at MIT at the time and was still smoking weed.

I believe that changes were made for the better by Ubuntu to rectify. I will try and dig up some links.
