The tendency for persons wanting to be right is everywhere. It is a loss of generosity, and if anything, generosity is the raison d'être of this place, the governing spirit. Pats on the back are to convey our love, and I see no reason to read more into it. We are more than the craft of assisting the growing of things in the natural world, so even that focus here is only part of what we are as beings. I hope this site extends this awareness, as our plants and fungi seem to be all about that to begin with, like it or not.

I don't need a dislike button to be able express my feelings. If something bothers me enough that I feel I need to make it known, I am more than capable of doing that.
And let's be realistic, we can't expect everyone to like everything that they read here. And I feel that when they don't people should have the ability to to explain their position as to why they don't (in a civilized manner of course). I dont think a 'dislike' button accomplishes that.

There are good points to hate or dislike system.
In the example I wrote few msg back..
If I saw that the opinion of other person was generally disliked or discredited .. I might have been able to let the thing pass.
as an intellectual past time .. I have been working on the functionality side of such system. high goal of such would be to lower the degree of hierarchy within democratic societies and try to diminish the powers of lobbying sector.
One danger is the use of dead to swing vote in ones favor. Modern day equivalent is the use of dummy and/or hacked accounts. ( i am referring to larger - more prone to abuse- concept but same applies here )
IF one were to tackle such task .. there would have to be a serious commitment to the project .. just doing one thing without re-designing system to to accommodate needed functionality .. is more likely to generate anger and frustration beyond what good it will provide.

Votes from the walking dead eh? Feels like like/dislike is a binary thing though, doesn't actually incite people to express how they feel about a particular thing, as in finding the proper words to express their idea or impression.
I guess it's a good tool to measure the popularity of submited projects, ideas, etc. though

I believe that, when exercised properly by a community, such a thing can establish a reliable system for the recognized and promoted reputation, good or bad, of the members of the community. So, my vote would be yes.
