I never buy melons from the store anymore especially watermelons.. they have no flavor.. cardboard tastes better.. lol.. this last weekend I got a sugar baby melon and it was really good.. there's also a lady who sells really big juicy cantaloupe at the local gas station every weekend. So yea I encourage you to shop at your local farmers market.. not only will you get better produce you help out a local farmer. I used to vend my jams and breads there a few years ago so I know how hard they work setting up and breaking down tents and tables and for little profit. So go support your local farmers!

We have created a silly culture of shipping produce thousands of miles to grocery stores. So genetics have been selected for long lasting perfection and size, taste has been substituted for looks. Those advertisers got into our heads and screwed everything up. The biggest brightest one should taste the best right!

 

I would love to see a cultural change where most food is grown  local and organically. We have some great greenhouses here that provide local vegetables year round for dirt cheap prices. I have to admit I thought it was just hippy stuff when organic started popping up in grocery stores. It's hard to beat anything taste wise when it's out of someone's little garden

I like em. Anytime I have a bumper crop of watermelon. Canalope,silverqueen, or okra they usually trade or pay me. So I do love a farmer market. I'm working on my tomatoes for that reason

I remember you selling jams and the stories to go with them! I wish I had the capacity to grow enough to pump out some jams, but the little garden I did plant this year took a massive dump from the heat and my lack of vigilance. I am bummed about it, but watering every day in this heat is ridiculous at best. I have gotten a decent amount of tomatoes, but the pumpkins, squash, and watermelons just up and said "fuck this heat" lol.. and the strawberries? Fuget abou dit.

I get most my fruit to make jams from the markets.. when I lived down south I would visit the mennonite produce place and they would always give me a deal at the end of the fruit season.. I could get a whole bushel of apples for twenty bucks.. been trying to get back down there but I missed the berry season but hopefully I can make it for the apples. I hate prepping apples though but love me some apple pie! My dad has 3 persimmon trees on his property and I've made pudding and pies and would like to do jam this year if I can get to them before the critters do.. they beat me to em last year.. birds and deer strip the trees naked! Gonna have to sit out there with my shotgun and guard it.. lol

That mepkin abbey monastery is near me in a way. It gets very cool around that area and NW into Appalachia. I just mention it because the mennonite area feels close they do some awesome things with woodworking in NC and I just was wondering by chance and being too chatty.

I'm in the coastal planes but go up there frequently.

I'm in the mid west.. there's a large mennonite community to the south and amish community to the north. Never met nicer people.. very kind and respectful.. wish the rest of the world would look at them for an example of how we should act toward each other
