Finally made 1/2 of my first true Hügelkultur mound. This will replace my raised garden beds.

Base of mound is the trunk of a tree we cut down. Then layers of smaller tree pieces, soil, compost, humus, spawn, dirt, browns, greens, etc.
I broke a jar of king oyster spawn and mixed the glass and spawn in there. I had a planter full of old KO blocks, naturscapes, branches, compost and soil. That was mixed through out. Lots of myc running.

Big lasagna of spawn, earth, compost, and trees.

Can't wait to see if this produces mushrooms and garden goodies. Eventually it will get raked into the garden plot.
Will try a few smaller beds with lions mane and shiitake. Probably eventually move some ovoids and cyans over.

I did some hugleculture type beds. I did some with larger tree material similar to yours but a dug a 1 foot wide trench about 30ft long and then put all the material in the trench and covered it back up. I then put 7 5 gallon buckets of spent coffee grounds on top. This was before my intentioal mushroom days so everything that popped up was wild inedible species. It took a year for it to be productive as a garden bed, but it grows onions and potatoes with ease now. Currently its full of cabbage and some volunteer potatoes.d2e281fa3d64631370f8ae51d0a78467.jpgcd90b9170fd489990437eb359bf14f95.jpgefb5e554f2ec6f42ad1f95ac554a61d8.jpg

Nice I wanted to go that way but our soil is way too hard and compact.

Added a few more layers of leaf litter, sandy compost, manure/hay compost, substrate, more branches. Going for about waist high, just a little over knee high. Trash can in background for reference.

Some more layers. Ice/snow was fun to move.

I wish I had fruits for my lost wine cap culture. It’s been a year coming spring and no fruits. Maybe too much wood in the bed.

If you need KO let me know.

Word I’m trying to make a ton of winecap spawn before spring . What’s a good sawdust spawn recipe for that ? I had some on oats but I assume you’ll want to limit the oats for fear of vermin .

My dirt keeps getting darker and darker and less compacted. I think I'm doing something right.

I do lippa's fuel tek essentially. Somewhere around 6 cups water to 6.5-7 cups wood. Just need to play with it. All woods are hydrated differently it seems.

That last post is way off with hydration. 5c water to 6c fuel pellets.

It's starting, spring's coming.
