Redboy 2012

It's been quite a trip between me and the Redboy Cubensis. I first got my spores from a local vendor in 06 and read about it in some cool threads about its return , because it was suppose to have been resurrected after decades of being "lost". I began working with it and growing it out , taking spores , cleaning up cultures and making isolates.

Eventually it started not to look like it first did , which was like a normal cube , opening cap etc , but fatter/meatier stems and it started looking more and more like Penis Envy over the years. The caps became inrolled and non-opening and the stalks took on comical fatness. This took place over a period of about 3 or 4 years and many grows.

Originally most of the caps opened , but now i'd say well under half are inrolled and sometimes almost all. Here's a picture of Redboys on the left and Amazon on the right:

redboy1.jpg

Some of the funnier fruits end up looking like funky acorns ! Most have thick meaty stalks that blue severely on contact. In many tests , by many friends , these Redboys are up there with any Cube for potency. Still to this day friends ask for them by name despite having tried dozens of the usual suspects.

I almost lost this sub-strain after a series of moves , break-taking and bungles. Luckily I sent off spores at one point to a trusted topiate at one point because I lost my spore library and had to ask him if he could send me back a print and he did. That I took through a grow and made several prints which I again sent to a friend here who kindly ... very kindly , grew it out and sent me a half dozen dark prints. That set me up again and I'm extremely grateful. Just so you know , "Roc-Style" is a tip of the hat to our superior mod Roc , who inspired countless many to use Horse manure and even try it alone as a stand alone substrate. Here's to you old chum !

Here's what I'm doing this time around:

Started the spores on popcorn that I soaked for 18 hours and then PC'd at 15 PSI for 60 minutes. I used small jars because that's what I had around , that colonized quickly so I did a G2G transfer into bigger quart jars (and so on). When I had enough popcorn spawn I began to gather the other stuff I needed for the project.

266079d1336202434-redboy-roc-style-strai

I acquired some excellent quality Horse manure in large quantity so I decided to pasteurize a bunch and use it in a few different ways. First I soaked the manure for a few hours in containers and then drained it. It was already broken up well so I added it to a large tub and also a bucket. Those vessels I filled with hot water heated to about 170 F (it cools a bit). I submerged the manure into the hot water bath , covered the tub & bucket and waited one hour. After the hour I added more 170 F water to each vessel so that it was about 160F at least for the full 2 hours.

266086d1336202446-redboy-roc-style-strai

Next I took bungy cords and placed them over each container to keep the lid on and for the tub just moved the lid askew , enough for water to come out and let gravity do the work of draining each vessel. I used an outside set of stairs with a barrel below to catch the manure water for use in the garden. With the bungys it works excellent and no manure fell out in the process. I let each vessel drip dry drain.

266085d1336202445-redboy-roc-style-strai

266082d1336202439-redboy-roc-style-strai

After they were drained I scooped bunches of hot manure (with rubber gloves on) into a large pillow case. Now sometimes I do the hang it on a tree thing and wait till morning , but often I need to do it sooner. For those times I "Walk the plank" ... place the full , tied pillow case on a hard surface , put a board on that and get on up and surf on it , see-saw side to side and that extra moisture comes shooting out of there ... like I mean there is a lot of extra water. Roll it around , rearrange it and squeeze again. Dump that squeezed sack of shit out on a clean tarp (i'm outside) and repeat until all the poo is squeezed. Now let it cool completely , before bringing it inside in a tub.

266081d1336202438-redboy-roc-style-strai

Now the fun and laborious part started. Filling mono-tubs was the first order of business. I took my shiny jars of glistening popcorn , shook them to break them up and then mixed several jars worth into the tub with the freshly cooled manure. Mixed that around good and proper then commenced to filling. Started with some easy to do monotubs. Laid a few inches of sub & spawn in each , patted them down with gloved hand and put the lids on. The lids had 4 golf-ball sized holes in each filled with polyfill.

266088d1336205783-test-monospawn.jpg

266093d1336207886-test-tubby.jpg

Then came the logs. I've always had good luck with them since my first grow , so I basically do it the same way I always have. Which is to wear gloves and stuff plastic incense bags like a mad monkey ... cram it , stuff it , tamp it , close it and repeat. Its not actually bad work at all , kind of a labour of love. After all the bags are stuffed I clean them up with a cloth , clean the tops wear they ziplock and make sure they are closed. Then they are poked with a large sewing needle to make airholes evenly around and placed in the incubator. 75 - 80 F total dark.

266087d1336205781-test-logstuff.jpg

266083d1336202441-redboy-roc-style-strai

With the spawn that was left I pressed a series of pucks. This was done by stuffing manure/popcorn spawn into yogurt containers , packed and then slammed down and removed like you would a sand-castle. The finished pucks were placed in a chamber for colonization same as the others. These will fruit similar to cakes , they are basically pressed-sub cakes ... pucks.

Here's what it looks like making a puck.

https://mycotopia.ne...ookie-puck2.jpg

I'll keep you posted as it goes along. Hopefully the mycogods will shine on me and allow me a nice harvest of Redboys. I really love this strain and think there's something special about it. No word of a lie it rivals woodlovers for potency. I'm not sure if it acquired a genetic hiccup , or has some manner of "disease" , but it has been this way for years no matter how much it cleaned up or taken to agar , then spore and so on.

My goal is to continue picking good clone isolates and get a real even batch of the kind of shapes and sizes (and potency) i'm looking for. Also I plan on having some fun along the way.

Thanks for coming by. Will report back on progress.

There's a few Redboys running around ... apparently. There's the snake venom ones and the Lavender Boy offshoots and some ones that look straight up like "normal" Cubes. It's hard as a Redboy owner to know which one you've got. This one I have looks a little like some pics you see in various threads , but I'am yet to have a "Oh yah, that's them moment" after years of searching and reading all the Redboy threads.

Interesting stuff.

I missed posting a picture of the Pucks in the first post , cause time ran out to edit , but here's what this round looks like. Kept it real simple. In fact some joker bought every vermiculite flake in my town , 2 stores worth ... more than a pallet, wonder what their doing heh!? Anyhow no verm available so I used straight Horse manure and Popcorn. After "water-boarding" the pillowcase most of the extra excess water was removed , which made puck-pressing no problem , I didn't even have to press to hard as there was nothing to expel.

The yogurt containers are packed , tucked and tamped full of manure and then turned upside down with a clap down and they slide out.

Many times I have had a bad habit of leaving grain jars to long to colonize due to neglect-tek and business. This can be okay , but often leads to issues of delays and possible contams. This time I carefully watched for signs of first full-colonization then G2G'd into fresh popcorn and the moment that was ready i used it to spawn. This means the Redboy is comfortable in its surroundings and healthy. Also it is super thrilled to go from rescued prints - to clean popcorn - to grade A Horse shit sub. It's already sinking its teeth into its new digs and is sitting at a lovely 22 F which is another thing ... I'm cheap and live in a frozen winter-wonderland 6 months of the year. its still damn cold here as we speak , but rather than do what I have always done which is have them deal with the same room-temp I live in (up and down with the rise and fall of the woodstove) , I dedicated a heater in a small space to keep them above 70F at all times. Of course this will lend to faster growth , but also might also raise the spectre of contams. Thats one bonus of slow cold colonization , little to no contams , but that time wasted , especially for actives is not necessarily a good/safe thing.

For folks interested in reading all the various Redboy related threads here at Topia , here's the Redboy tag-search results:

-Pasteurization-:

To make bulk subs like you see used in the threads you'll need to learn how to pasteurize the Horse manure and other additives (straw , coir , etc). It's a very simple but rewarding process.

Here's a very basic , simple TEK for pasteurizing your manure mixes. In this case straw is used , but that could be anything you want in there including Horse dung.

Log stuffing is fun ... for about 10 minutes. Then its kind of a drag , but needs to be done. That size bag takes off and colonizes very fast at proper temperature. In the old days my redboy logs would begin pinning invitro very early. Here's Redboy on logs from the past. The pins started very early while they were still in the bags. You can tell distinct cap variations even at this early stage by the cap colors.

Posted Image

I'm interested in seeing how they go now. The G2G growth was very rhyzo and fast , so hopefully that carries on with the Horse flop.
Off to stuff some more logs.

Always doing something cool you are. Anticipating beautiful fruits I am.

I know you were excited about having this strain going again, looking awesome.

Interesting observation about keeping spawn around too long. I am guilty of this and will be more diligent to time it better.

This is probably the most straight forward simple grow I've done in eons. No cardboard, leaves, Garlic, Knotweed, Burrdock or other adventurous sub materials. Just straight up old-skool Horse manure pasteurized well, not even any verm. This is partly by plan and partly through circumstance. Also the manure was in such good condition and consistency that the other usual additions would have been a pile of work for not much noticeable increase in production.

Everything is set and now I'll try and not even look in on them for several days but for to check the temperature. Most times it is us that is the major contam vector. We certainly carry contams on us and disturb the airflow with our movement. In the past I checked growth several times a day... Now I'm more into the "Christmas Effect" of waiting a few days at least and seeing big changes.

Last peak was at the pucks in their new home inside a monotub ... at least for colonization , maybe permanently. The myeclium is already recovering on the Popcorn from last night and turning bright white, a good sign.

I started this grow on Popcorn in small jars.

I do that because I learned here smaller jars are quicker to colonize and therefore less chance of contamns like the Grinch who stole Shroommas, Trich. The bigger the jar you start your spores in the longer it will take to colonize and the greater the threat of contams , especially when you start talking quart jars and bigger. The size I use I guess would be tall half-pints ... or so , I'm in a metric country so it gets confusing with the names. Anyhow I start the spores and keep them in the dark at 80 F'ish for a week or so and they really take off.

When they are done I have options. I can either spawn them on to bulk substrate ... or i can double up and expand them into many more jars depending on my needs. In this case I wanted more jars so I did a Grain to Grain transfer. This time I upgraded to quart jars which were 5/8's full of PC'd popcorn. Each jar I opened inside a glovebox and dumped one small jar of shaken popcorn spawn into. After fill all , I went back and rolled each one around until the colonized kernels were evenly distrubuted.

A delay in being ready for making a project plan caused me to do another G2G into even larger jars still. This time half-gallon jars , again just about 75% full of Popcorn and I filled to near capacity with room to shake & roll.

As I started my projects I now had a few batches of Popcorn in various stages of newly colonized , just about colonized and just started. I decided to try something I havent done , for the reasons I explained above ... I G2G transffered into a gallon jar of popcorn. Because of its sheer size I PC'd it at 15 PSI for 90 mins to make sure it was clean , then I dumped 25 to 30 % colonized Popcorn into it and mixed it well.

All of this was marked and put away in a warm environment to colonize. Here's what the various jars look like after the first transfer from the small jars:

Posted Image

I'm really happy with the growth after the G2G transfers. Even the next 48 hours showed amazing rhyzo growth and recovery.

There were other options there though when I had those small jars of fully colonized Popcorn ... one of those was making mycelium syringes , that work like instant LC's. It's really simple and effective to. Hats off to folks here for inovating and sharing this wonderful technique.

Making mycelia slurry syringes - bulk inoculant Tek

https://mycotopia.ne...culant-tek.html

-Fahtty Isolation/Mycelium syringe tek-

http://mycotopia.net...s/5/147159.html

Those are both super awesome TEK's I could have used to inject water into the popcorn jars , swirled and sucked back instantly usable mycelium water. It works fantastically and I would have done it except I chose to go for the G2G transfers instead. I still might do this because you can inject water , suck back all the syringes worth of mycelium water you care to do and still go ahead and use that Popcorn for a G2G or spawn it on to bulk sub like manure , it doesn't mind the shower whatsoever !

My first grow was some Goat poo logs.

Logs are very good in many ways. They have to be set up properly , especially after they are fully colonized and ready to fruit. They need high humidity once you pull them out of their comfy bag. They become vunerable. There are ways to chronicfy them or sandbag etc , often I set them on shelves , but a sonic humidifier or the like is almost necessary to keep the room humid , even with a tent around them. It can be done with manual misting but is a lot of work daily. I'll likely set the colonized logs in monotubs for fruiting. Not 100% sure yet.

Best thing about logs is that unlike a monotub , if you get a spot of trich , you can remove the log right away. With a monotub or large bulk vessel , the first sign of trich your in fairly serious trouble and its hard to stop it from ruining the entire amount of material. Also logs are easy to handle and stash , big tubs can be difficult to hide in a cupboard ... for instance.

I'd like to work on having actual air breather patches on the bags that house the logs instead of poking holes. Touch wood , I havent had much problems with the hole method as far as contams , but it is a bit of a breach of security to have open air holes. For this batch I'll stick with the program.

Now of course .... some links.

Hey Hyph, how's it going?

Man, I like the way you set out your threads. Very easy to read & understand.

I'm quite interested in the pucks, always have been? It's definately on my cards to give them a go.

How do you let them colonise? In a tub? Perlite? Sorry if you've already answered this.

I'll be doing some work tomorrow & I will give one a try.

Also could you let me know about the differences you've noticed in using different puck sizes.

Say between using a butter container vs an ice cream container?

Are there any size limit factors?

Cheers Hyph, love the work man :)
